A couple sailing along the coast of South Africa got the fright of their lives when a 10m whale breached and landed on their yacht.

PHOTOS: Monster hits the deck

Ralph Mores, 59, and Paloma Werner, 50, ran for cover as the 40-tonne southern right whale destroyed both the steel mast and roof on their yacht Intrepid in the incident on Sunday.

The incredible moment was captured on camera by a tourist in another yacht travelling behind.

Mr Mothes, an experienced sailor, said he had no time to steer the yacht away from the whale because it breached so suddenly.

"It really was quite incredible but very scary," he told Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper.

"We'd spotted it about 100m away and thought that was the end of it. Then suddenly it was right up beside us."

The whale thrashed about on the boat’s deck before soon hurling itself back into the ocean.

Mr Mores said he was grateful for the yacht's steel hull, which he believes saved the vessel from ruin.

The sailors were able to use their engine to motor back to shore at Table Bay, about 130km east of Cape Town.
