Former NL Ump Eric Gregg died tonight

He suffered a massive stroke yesterday. He was 55.

I'll never forget that 97 NLCS Game where he had a strike zone the size of a Buick, Livan Hernandez dominated that day.

Big fat guy right?

dirk digler 06-05-2006 08:52 PM

RIP.

Wasn't he the ump that weighed like 500lbs and was trying to lose weight?

Yes. He was also one of the five umps whose resignation was accepted by MLB when their union chief, Richie Phillips, somehow came to the conclusion that mass resignation as a bargaining tool was a good idea.

Gregg was a funny guy, too. He did several commercials and made appearances in the Philly area. I think he ended up working as a bartender/court jester in a joint there. RIP.

Sorry he died.
How can an umpire be so out of shape? This is like cops with donut jokes.

He was a Fat jackA$$ ump.

Heeeee's OUT!!!

Sorry to hear about anyone passing at such a young age. People passing away in their 50's makes me nervous....

Sorry he died. He wasn't one of the better umps.

he roly-poly Gregg gained off-season recognition with a TV sports show on "Evening Magazine." He was perhaps the only ump ever to call interference on himself. In 1978 he bumped Cardinal catcher Ted Simmons in the act of throwing and subsequently nullified a Dodgers double steal. (RTM)
