soo did Eli make a mistake or would the chargers be as good

after that draft fiasco,

who made the mistake

I am thinking Eli is second guessing himself right about now

But...would the chargers be as good if Eli were on the draw?

my one and only thread all week....hootie take note

Philip Rivers is the better QB.

I'd trade Carl Peterson for AJ Smith, and throw in Gunt to sweeten the deal.

ChiefsCountry 12-10-2006 04:31 PM

Chargers got lucky as hell out of that deal.

chagrin 12-10-2006 04:34 PM

No, Eli plays where Daddy wants him to play, end of story.

Rivers Roideman a 3rd and a 5th for Little Brother Manning.

That's a franchise making deal for SD...I remember watching at the time that I felt like NY gave up a lot of picks for him, especially since they had leverage, but I also thought Eli would be a very good QB, better than Rivers. I was right and wrong, and it would have been much better for us had those rights and wrongs been reversed.

el borracho 12-11-2006 12:46 AM

The Chargers would not be as good with Eli because they would not have received all those picks from NY.

I would say the same about the Michael Vick/ Ladanian Tomlinson decision also. I dont remember the excact situation that occured, but I do remember trying to guess which guy would be the best. Of course I was wrong and thought it would be Vick.

Eli acted like a whiney bitch. He thought he was too good for that franchise because at the time they had been perennially horrible. Well, guess what Eli. When you suck for 4 straight years and accumulate draft picks up the arse, sooner or later you are going to get good with that talent. A winner is a winner every where he goes, it doesn't matter.

ferrarispider95 12-11-2006 01:21 AM

Hate to say it, but chargers have lots of young talent.

The problem with the Chiefs is that we really never bottomed out to pick up a lot of low first round picks. Chargers had lots of bad years and drafted pretty smart and made a hell of a deal with the giants.

It looks like Cromartie is legit too, I know lots of people want him in the draft. I am still glad we got dj last year, merriman is a beast, but it seems dj is a better all around linebacker, especially in coverage. Also merriman will have the stigma of being a roider the rest of his career.

Vick for LT/Brees I believe was the end result...

Demonpenz 12-11-2006 01:38 AM

i was on the fence about cromartie. I could just see him in red and gold stinking it up and then me saying WTF we knew his knee was shitty

Regarding the Vick/LT trade in 2001.

The Chargers were originally going to select Michael Vick. However, then Chargers GM John Butler was unable to strike a pre-draftday deal with Vick's agent on a contract. San Diego wasn't willing to pay the exorbitant amount of money Vick wanted, with the Ryan Leaf fiasco still fresh in their memory. The Chargers then negotiated a trade with Atlanta who was interested in Vick and willing to pay his salary demands.

Soon after that 2001 draft, Vick signed his rookie contract -- a 6 year, $62 million deal that included a $3 million signing bonus and guaranteed $15.3 million his first three seasons.

In exchange for the Chargers' #1 overall draft pick, the Falcons swapped their 2001 #1 draft pick (5th overall), 2001 3rd round pick, 2002 2nd round pick, and WR Tim Dwight.

The Chargers used the draft picks to grab LaDainian Tomlinson and Tay Cody in 2001, and WR Reche Caldwell in 2002. The Chargers were also able to select Drew Brees in the second round in 2001 because they were still looking for a QB.

Brees, Cody, Caldwell, and Dwight are no longer with the Chargers and only LT remains from that 2001 trade.

So, after all the dealings and releases, 5 years later, it's pretty much Vick for LT.
