But they couldn't. Phelps had 8 chances to lose Gold, which is a whole lot easier considering he could have finished anywhere from 2-8, but he didn't.

It's impressive nevertheless. I said Phelps was argubly greatest Olympian ever, but it's not a slam dunk like shit for brains Silock believes.

How many other Olympic sports give an athlete that many chances to medal?

Swimming is not on an even playing field with other Olympic sports.

Track and field?

100m
200m
4x100 relay
4x200 relay
400m
4x400
800m
4x800

Don't penalize Phelps because he kicks ass in more than one discipline.

You're right. It's easy. That's why so many people have done it before.

That's horseshit. 800 meters is not even in the same class with the 100, 200 and 400.

Well Usain would do that if the Olympics would introduce the 40 meter dash, along with the 60 and 150.

There is more opportunity to gold in swimming than any other Olympic sport. They are not on an even playing field.

Umm, gymnastics and track and field have quite a few opportunities, also.

You've yet to name someone close to Phelps in greatness.

Oh, you mean they require different skill sets just like the different swimming events? I'll be damned...

I said Michael Phelps is arguably the greatest Olympian ever. I am not short cutting him here. He's a bad ass. You are preaching the choir.

Bob Mathias. Two-time gold medalist in the decathalon.

Eric Heiden.

Cards Fan 4 Chiefs 08-17-2008 01:50 PM

Carl Lewis, Larissa Latynina, Paavo Nurmi

Silock 08-17-2008 01:53 PM

Getting better.

How many did those things by the time they were 23?

kcxiv 08-17-2008 02:56 PM

Hell, if he wanted to i bet he could get at least 3-4 more golds in the next Olympics if he wanted too.

He is a couple of medals shy of the all-time total medal record held by some Ruski commy gymnastics chick.
Phelps said he wants to concentrate on individual sprint events for London, which means he probably won't compete in the relays and long distance swims.

'Hamas' Jenkins 08-17-2008 03:14 PM

It's hard to make an argument against him, although that d-bag who got banned does have a few points.

If anyone is in the conversation with him, it's Carl Lewis. He's the only guy to successfully defend the 100 meter title, he pulled off the Jesse Owens feat in the '84 olympics (probably all you can expect as far as # of golds from a T&F athlete in one games), and he's the only guy to successfully defend the long jump title...and he did that 3 times for a total of 4 golds.

He was a dropped baton in Seoul away from 10 gold medals.

and a 4x100 IM isn't in the same class as a 200 m butterfly. i don't see your logic here.

PastorMikH 08-17-2008 03:31 PM

Would he be eligable and able to compete at a top level in 4 years at 27-28?
