What's great about that is that it perfectly explains the Game 6 ninth inning.

1985 World Series, Game 6: Umpire Don Denkinger declared Royals baserunner Jorge Orta safe and the Royals rallied to beat the Cardinals and go on to win Game 7. Replays show Orta clearly was out. (Patrick Sullivan/The Kansas City Star).

Really? He was out? Are you sure? I don't think there was anything about this in the song.

Yeah, that was my goal. I'm sick and tired of Cardinals fans complaining about how that call lost the game. At the very least, the Royals would have tied the game. They missed popups, threw wild pitches, gave up hits, and then just completely collapsed in game seven.

ALSO, what all the Cardinals fans fail to mention is that Frank White was called out trying to steal second in the fourth inning. Replays show that he was safe. The next batter singled, and White would have scored on that play, giving the Royals a 1-0 lead.

The umpires blew calls both ways in this game. It evened out.

I'll be honest, I'm not a Royals fan and knew almost nothing about the 85 WS or Denkinger other than in passing. So I learned a lot making this.

**** Cardinals fans. I hope their jimmies are rustled until the end of time.

Orta got erased at 3rd anyway. The dropped pop-up ****ed St Louis more then Denkinger did.

EVEN STILL: All Denkinger's call "did" was force a Game 7. If the Cardinals deserved to win they shouldn't have allowed the Royals to drop 11 runs on them.

It was all that Don Denkinger's fault, everyone knows that. If he would have called Jorge Orta out like he was supposed to, the Cardinals would have won another World Series us Cardinal fans are entitled to enjoy and I wouldn't have memories of my dad kicking a hole in our living room wall and breaking our toilet, which then made us resort to using our outhouse for a week (seriously...I grew up in an ancient farm house in the boonies, in which is there is an outhouse on the land...I've taken many dumps in that outhouse over the years...just did last Summer for shits and giggles). Got to take my Old Man to the 7th game in Kansas City that magical year. We lived 100 miles north and I applied in the lottery for tickets and got 4 to the last game. Who would have guessed he would be dead 2 years later at the age of 51. The last major thing I ever did with him. I still miss him

right. Extra outs mean nothing.

Like I said, I have nothing against the Royals and would root for them against anybody but the Cards in the series.

But to say that call didn't change the series is myopic.

We had good teams every year back then, with 85 being a magic season for us. Then we got Glass for an owner. Now the Royals are the second least valuable team in MLB and havn't even sniffed the playoffs.

The Glass Curse lives on.

So your argument is that Jack Clark completely lose track of the pop-up because of that call? That the passed ball by Porter was because of the call?

Let's replay the inning if Orta is correctly called out:

Orta - Out
Balboni - Single, pinch runner
Sandberg - sacrifice still likely. Two outs, runner at 2nd.
Pinch hitter - McRae - likely still walked (passed ball probably never happens) to set up a force at any bag and work around a more dangerous hitter.
Iorg - bloop single to RF still ties the game.

AT BEST for the Cardinals... It's a tie game.

You know, I wasn't alive during the '85 WS and I never really fully investigated that 9th inning until just now. The Card's didn't get nearly as screwed over as the Card's fans that I know have always made it out to me.

One of the overlooked aspects of that inning is that had Orta been called out Clark is playing back at normal depth instead of holding the runner on. Doesn't mean he catches the pop up, but he probably has a much better read on it than he would holding a runner on.

That said any speculation is just that...speculation.

And speculation that the blown call is what the made the Cardinals implode for the rest of the inning as well as the entire seventh game is just that...speculation.

Of course, it is a futile exercise no matter what side you pulled for in that game. To say definitively what would have happened would require the ability to adjust for an infinite number of possible variances that could affect outcome.
