My Lai Massacre 45 years ago today

Today is the 45 year anniversary of the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam. American troops murdered 300 unarmed men, women and children. The US Army tried to cover it up, but a brave helicopter pilot stopped the killing and reported it forcing an investigation. The chopper pilot was Hugh Thompson, Jr. Thompson and his crew were awarded with The Soldier's Medal for bravery in 1998. Lt. Calley, who was responsible for the massacre, was sentenced to life in prison, then commuted to three and a half years served by Nixon.

I brought home a documentary from the library about this a few years ago, that chopper pilot and his crew saved a lot of lives.. that unit was literally out to destroy anything breathing, mowing them down by the dozens as they hid in ditches.

Calley was a real prick, but his commander, a guy named Captain Medina, gave the order to Calley's company to kill everything that moved in the village. Medina got off scott free. The army tried to cover this up and and did so for almost a year before the story got out. Both Medina and Calley are stone cold war criminals, and live among us here in the good ole USA.

Exactly. That's why no one really got punished. No on powerful in America ever goes down for anything.

Same shit, different day. US, Iran, China, Mauritania, France. As much as people want to pretend otherwise, all anybody can really do is ignore it.

Currently in pakistan. For the most part, the general population here likes the US or is indifferent to them because that's where big budget movies come from. They also hate the taliban/religious zealots because that's where bombs come from.

Most of the time, they're far more concerned with 110-115 degree heat with no electricity to care much about other countries, but there is certainly growing resentment towards the US for these arbitrary killings. Good news for the US, then, is that the general populace is almost completely powerless.

Same shit, different day.

PS. Pork loving pacifist atheist - don't drone bomb me, bro

He was held for a stopover at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka prior to being sent to Ft. Leavenworth. I remember the evening paper capturing his picture through the window of the plane.

Quote:

I was ordered to go in there and destroy the enemy. That was my job that day. That was the mission I was given. I did not sit down and think in terms of men, women and children. They were all classified as the same, and that's the classification that we dealt with over there, just as the enemy. I felt then and I still do that I acted as I was directed, and I carried out the order that I was given and I do not feel wrong in doing so."
He was a pretty ****ed up human being before the Army took him in. Bt that quote just cemented what how ****ed up he was.
