Jets cut 4 vets

Bob Glauber ‏@BobGlauber

As expected. "@nyjets: Jets announce 4 veterans have been released--LB Calvin Pace, S Eric Smith, T Jason Smith--TE Josh Baker waived."

Mike Garafolo ‏@MikeGarafolo

Jets saved about $24m with today's cuts. (Figures I tweeted earlier were the scheduled cap numbers. There's dead money in Pace's deal.)

Pro Football Weekly ‏@ProFootballWkly

Per @RavensInsider, the #Jets have also decided to cut ILB Bart Scott, no meeting at the Combine with his agent.

There's always more garbage to pick up the day after a holiday.

Sorter 02-19-2013 12:51 PM

Calvin Pace as a backup at OLB for depth is a good pickup IMO.

The Franchise 02-19-2013 12:52 PM

We should bring in Jason Smith and move him to OG.

htismaqe 02-19-2013 12:53 PM

We need to pick up Jason Smith.

You can never have enough top 5 draft picks on the offensive line.

Hammock Parties 02-19-2013 12:54 PM

You guys are sick in the head.

Sorter 02-19-2013 01:00 PM

Baker could be a top 5 TE

RealSNR 02-19-2013 01:03 PM

Really don't feel comfortable drafting Joeckel in the top 5. Too risky. What if he's Jason Smith?

tyton75 02-19-2013 01:03 PM

If the money was right, there would be nothing wrong with bringing in Smith and Pace to compete for starting time.

Bump 02-19-2013 01:07 PM

Jason Smith to right tackle and get rid of that snotty, know it all **** Winston.

CoMoChief 02-19-2013 01:11 PM

Wasn't Smith drafted by STL?

He's been with like 2-3 teams no?

He played his last yr of college at NWMS. We were running him out of wildcat in certain situations. A TE! That should tell you something.

We also ran a fake punt that was basically a power sweep w/ him carrying the ball. Seems like every time we ran it it went for really big yardage. One of the first really big plays he made for us was early in the year at UNO, he ran that fake and hurdled a dude w/o breaking stride en route to the end zone on a 50 some odd yard run. I about choked on the pizza I was eating while watching that as I didn't know who he was at the time beyond his name and that he'd transferred in for a year from Delaware IIRC. He did it again for similar yardage and a score sans the hurdle against Mowest in the playoffs, sparked a big 2nd half rally for us. Had good hands too, made a lot of plays for us.

IDK about the pros as I'm talking about D2 here but he's a freakish athlete. I wouldn't mind the Chiefs giving him a look.

Yep, he was the #2 pick of the Rams, right before Tyson Jackson. The Jets were his 2nd team.

#Jets MT @BrianCoz: The moves today cleared about $24 million in cap space. J. Smith (12), Pace (8.5), E. Smith (3), J. Baker (500,000)

I would take a look at Bart Scott. Our DC certainly should be familiar with him.

RealSNR 02-19-2013 02:17 PM

I have purposely not listened to or cared about anything on the Jets since the Tebow trade. Does Bart Scott still have stuff left in the tank?

No, Bart has nothing, he was so slow last season that it was painful to watch

Sad. It would have been really convenient to have a vet familiar with the scheme that we could bring in on a one year deal.

Jets cast offs, for whatever reason, don't seem like a good idea.

That's the good thing about signing people to deals worth so much money. When they don't work out and you cut them, you get the joy of having cap space. That's why we did it with Jackson and Cassel. This way we could eventually cut them and feel good that we opened up some cap space.

Baker was a wrecking crew for NWMSU that year. He basically single-handily willed us to victory at TAMU-Kingsville in the playoffs.

Why would we want to severely downgrade a position like that? When Winston is sticking up for our 1st round QB, you guys will change your tune.

Yeah, I hate the Jets growing up around here. The fan base has the same history of the Chiefs more or less and yet they are as cocky as Cowboy or Steeler fans. Still, I thought that was awesome when it happened. Even when I don't agree, watching a player call out an "expert" is funny. The effort on the landing was appreciated as well.

He played RT in 2010 and 2011.

He's a good run blocker, mediocre pass blocker.

Scott Fought Through Serious Toe Injury

February 19th, 2013*·*No Comments

Free agent linebacker Bart Scott injured his toe week 4 against the Patriots and was advised by several team doctors to sit out for the rest of the regular season. Scott severely tore some ligaments in his toe and played through the injury. Scott is 100% healthy heading into free agency.

DaneMcCloud 02-19-2013 11:21 PM

Jets cut four vets, Chiefs cut two Queeefs.

Even Steven.

bigbucks24 02-19-2013 11:26 PM

It may open up $24 million in cap space, but it puts them about $7 million under the cap with $6 million of that slotted for rookies. So, $1 million under the cap and you just cut 4 starters and your starting TE, SS, FS, K, RB are all free agents. And the QB you hate has a cap hit of almost $13 million that escalates to $17 million if you cut him. Sucks to be a Jets fan.
