Five Years Ago This Memorial Day....
 

Today, May 26, 2008 marks the five year anniversary of the death of Kenneth Allen Nalley in Iraq.


Kenny was the son of my Mom's best friend and one of my childhood playmates. He lived just down the street from my favorite aunt so we played together often. Kenny was an MP in the Iraq War and died at just nineteen years old, one year after his high school graduation and only a few months after the start of the war.

Kenny's funeral was so big it had to be held at the gymnasium of the local school. The small town we grew up in closed down for that few hours. There was not one open business in the entire town, and rows of American flags lined Main Street. His favorite music played during a slide show of his short life.

Since Kenny's death many more childhood friends have served in Iraq, and thank God his is the only funeral I've had to attend.

Please, this Memorial Day think of our troops in Iraq. No matter what your political affiliation, when a friend dies over there, your life is never the same again. I know my heart and mind will be on Kenny today. Please pray for his mama, because her heart breaks again every year.
