walnuts

So I've got probably 10 walnut trees in and around my house. They drop all freakin over the place. Each year, I pay my kids $2 per 5 gallon bucket of walnuts they pick up and then just dump them in a pile in the woods for the squirrels. Anyone have any ingenious way to de husk them without doing it by hand? If there were an easier way to do it, I might consider processing them. thanks

Old Dog 10-04-2012 12:10 PM

walnut sheller?

Rain Man 10-04-2012 12:11 PM

I've seen a few corn shellers on ebay that the seller says will take the husk off of walnuts, but didn't know if that was really that effective or not and don't want to spend the money if its not really for that purpose and doesn't work real well.

Old Dog 10-04-2012 12:17 PM

I don't know of anyone that's tried a corn sheller. It doesn't seem like it would be "enough" for the shells of a walnut though.

vailpass 10-04-2012 12:18 PM

I remember picking up walnuts at my grandma's place. That black shit that comes out of them would stain your hands for days.

tooge 10-04-2012 12:18 PM

Ok then, anyone want a shit load of un hulled walnuts?

I'm sorry, I wasn't very clear.

I have land, you want rid of your walnuts. Let me know where you want me to send the planting map. If you would, please try to keep the lines straight and the spacing correct.

If I have kids, I'm sure they will appreciate your hard work when they sell the trees.:thumb:

alpha_omega 10-04-2012 01:07 PM

F that...just cut 'em down.

Rain Man 10-04-2012 01:14 PM

It seems like you could invent a walnut-shooting gun and then open a walnut shooting range. You make the guns with the right amount of power to break the shells without ruining the nut.

People come and pay you money to shoot walnuts at targets, and at the end of the day you go to the targets and pick up the shelled walnuts. Maybe you even offer a contract for someone else to pick them up and sell them, and you make money on both ends.

BeMyValentine 10-04-2012 01:19 PM

Uses

Advertise them to some trappers. They use them to dye their traps black.

Or jack your car up so you have about an inch between the tires and the ground. Have someone gun it and you feed them in between. They go flying but you get the walnut out.

tooge 10-04-2012 01:20 PM

maybe we could stamp pioli's face in them with an x through it and drop them from an airplane. Anyone wanna donate?

R8RFAN 10-04-2012 01:22 PM

Sell em at the road unless they are everywhere where you live or take em to the farmers market and sell them to a vendor

Bump 10-04-2012 01:24 PM

I'll come and take them off of your hands for $20. I walnut take any less.

Dr. Johnny Fever 10-04-2012 01:27 PM

You have walnut trees IN your house?

FAX 10-04-2012 01:27 PM

Drop them from an airplane. That should work.

Actually, now that I think on it, people in KS used to spread them out on roads and driveways and the cars would de-huskerate them. You got the added benefit of hearing this weird crunching sound, too. Like you were driving over the dried bones of Chiefs season ticket holders.

no but I'm about to make some pot brownies and walnuts would be so bomb in it right now!

seclark 10-04-2012 01:29 PM

we used to just pile them in the gravel driveway and let the car/truck run over them for a couple months.

i've got them all over my timber. people tell me that if they're straight and tall enough, they're worth a lot of $$$. guy i work with says he bought 40 acres of timber, sold the walnut trees off and paid for it.

damn things are hell on mower blades, though.

They are still fairly valuable if you market them correctly. The two generations before me used walnut trees as financial saviors in the 80's and as a means to gather up down payments when expanding farms. As long as you replant them and aren't in a hurry, money really does grow on trees.

yeah, i've thought about selling mine, but i figure when they cut down one walnut, they're going to screw up all the hickories and oaks surrounding them. don't really want to damage the surrounding timber.

We cut a few ourselves for that very reason.

At least you know they're there if you are one day forced to need the resource.

no. I was told greener is softer and easier and less chance of worms. still a pain in the ass. They taste great fresh like that tho. Very soft and sweet, but too much work.

We exchange pecans for cracked pecans every year. That machine would have made cave men fat.

I mow over the walnuts and hickory nuts. It's loud, they fly.... No way in hell I'm picking up 50,000 nuts.

Yeah, that's a different species of walnut than what I grew up around. The ones we had were round, wrinkly, solid black little deals that were hard as stone and just as difficult to crack.

You're probably correct.

If you'll notice his trees were not tall and straight as a normal "Timber Walnut" tends to appear. He's growing Walnuts that have been bred to produce a meaty product that's easy to harvest. There is a pretty substantial difference.

I crack em with a hammer like the guy in the second video. those two videos show the two different types. Now, get your ass back to supervising 6 year old walnut crackers

FAX 10-04-2012 02:44 PM

If you smack one of those black walnuts like that walnut expert guy did, your little wooden hammer deal would bounce off, hit you in the face, put your eyes out, and you would be blind for the rest of your entire life ... and you still wouldn't have any walnut meat to eat.

An old timer would stop by my place and collect buckets. he said something bout spreading them out, letting them dry. Then put them in an old cloths dryer....not sure.

Google is your friend.

Fire Me Boy! 10-05-2012 07:24 AM

My parents dump theirs in their driveway and run over them with the cars for a couple weeks. It works well - it takes the hull off, but the tires don't crack the shell of the nut.
