Get er done .. you'd still make a good blocker .. plus ya get to knock em on their asses .....
|
I have a friend in Colombia that's big in the roller derby scene there. I could have her give you some info if you'd like. I know she has a lot of fun with it...
|
one of our Account Exec's in our office is a Roller Derby girl. We all go to her home bouts and cheer for her...
and we drink alot of beer as well. Next year we are going to try and be a sponser for her team. |
Roller Derby is huge here.
Very cool scene, and the women (at least here) are very welcoming and encouraging of newcomers. They want to grow the scene and make it huge, so they're always looking for newbies. You'll probably get to skate against the Fayetteville girls if you do it. |

I don't know what a "roller derby" is.
|
Do it. No regrets. If it sounds fun to you, it probably will be. Great exercise too.

If you get to meet Danielle Colby-Cushman, you owe us PICS!!
I know she doesn't skate any more, but on the off chance you run into her at a gig. |

If it sounds interesting and you have some talent just give it a try.

There is a club that practices down the street from me. They are a good group of gals.
I get the feeling they could push me around, and yes, I would like that. Good luck on your pursuits! |
Do it. Good luck.

Didn't you see Rollerball? |
From most of the girls I have seen you will fit in fine. The skinny girls get hurt to easy.
|
My wife is a member of the local derby team... Has a blast with it.

Make sure your health insurance premiums are up to date. I played softball this year for the first time in about 15. I'm one of those one speed only guys. Max effort is great, but as you get older, things go snap, crackle, and pop much easier than in your youth. It'll probably be as fun as you remember, but it'll most likely be more difficult and painful. Have a go at it. Good luck and keep us posted.

A friend of mine (who is your age, actually) did this several years ago in Colorado before she got injured. She had the time of her life, but she did get banged up. But whatever, go for it. You only live once. Take pictures.
Will you get to come up with a nickname? |

Flat skater girls? Out.

Sounds like fun and it would be a great way to get your exercise.

A girl I work with is a derby girl and loves it. Have fun.
Don't you have to come up with a derby name if you're in? Maybe that's just here or in her league. Her name is Elba Mae Fracture. |

I've got 30 days to determine if I want to do it. The WFTDA requires each person to take out an insurance policy, which is $60 per year. My dues will be $25 per month. The major upfront cost will be equipment. Skateboard helmet, mouth guard (I'm so getting the pro line, elbow pads, wrist guards, knee pads (which they said was the one thing you don't want to skimp on), and of course skates. My skates are too small, but I think the plates and wheels are still good, so I just have to get new boots.
The owner of the rink has known me since I was 4 years old. He kept bragging on me to one of the guys in charge of the practice. There were about ten of us there (newbies anyway). When they asked if we could skate, Ted was like "This one definitely can. She's an old rink rat." I said that the key word in that sentence was "old". If anything, it was great to catch up. I didn't have my skates with me, since I knew I couldn't wear them, so I think I'm going to take them out tomorrow during a public session. Anyway, the girls are their own LLC. They have different committees (marketing, training, non-skating officials, bouts, etc). You have to serve on at least one. In order to compete on the B team, you have to have 50% practice attendance. For the A team, you must have 70%. Also, WFTDA requires all participants to be tested (physical test and written test over rules). There really is a lot to it, but it's going to be so much fun! |
Whip It was a pretty decent movie about Roller Derby from a few years back...with Hotties Drew Barrymoore, Ellen Page and Kristin Wiig

Oh, and I get to come up with my own name and number (as long as they're not already taken). I can come up with a name, but it has to be turned in to the president of the WFTDA for approval before it can be registered and put on a shirt.
One of the people suggested twoevils.com to look for names. I went but it's a domain name place. Anyway, name suggestions welcome! |

I really thought people would jump on suggesting names for me...lol

Very cool that you went. I was half expecting a, "I decided not to go" post, so it's awesome that you followed through and are excited.

In the early 2000's I did some graphic design work for the Phoenix Land Sharks roller derby team. For a match against the legendary LA Thunderbirds, they had at Jobing.com arena.

I don't know why a name like Poop Taco wouldn't intimidate your opponents. I'm actually about 92% serious about choosing that name.

C.P. Luv #58
When people ask what the C. P. stands for, depending on what kind of mood you're in you can make up different shit: Cock Punisher Cornhole Patty Cute & Perky Chiefs Princess etc..etc.. |

Do it. Worse case they say no but for the rest of your life you can tell people you tried out for a professional roller derby team.

Speaking of equipment, too, can anyone recommend a good skateboard shop online? Looking for pads and helmet.

I have a friend who always says, "You're dead to me, Endicott," whenever I give him shit. Someone suggested DEAD END-icott. I think it's a great blocker name. They also came up with END-icottya, which would be a good jammer name.
|
Two kinds of Roller Derby girls - those big bruiser dykey types or the hotties they just throw in there for eye candy.
