Be the GM Part 7

This will be a repeating feature. We will take each position in turn. For each position we will look at the players we already have on the roster and whether those player should be retained, resigned, traded, or cut. We will also discuss whether we need help in the draft, trades or free agency. The next position is an area with a lot of questions, RECEIVERS AND TIGHT ENDS.

Currently on roster and cap hit if signed next year:

Dwayne Bowe WR UFA
Steve Breaston WR under contract $1.8 million cap hit
Jonathon Baldwin WR under contract approx $1.8 million cap hit
Tony Moeaki TE under contract $660k cap hit
Jerheme Urban WR UFA
Anthony Becht TE UFA
Terrance Copper WR under contract unknown details
Leonard Pope TE UFA
Jake O'Connel TE RFA

Cut Urban, Becht and O'Connell. Keep everyone else.

I think we have a lot a freedom here. I think Pope is an adequate backup if the price is right. We should go after a TE in the later rounds of the draft. Bowe is a no-brainer to re-sign. I have to wonder how much he'll want to sign if we don't have a better option at QB.

Did y'all know that Copper ranks sixth on the team in NFL experience? He's listed as being in his 8th year.

Resign Bowe...Priority #1

Keep Baldwin, Breaston, and Copper (ST standout). Look for a quality ST player in Free Agency and draft a rookie WR in the later rounds.

Stick with Moeaki, draft a TE in round 5-6 that specializes in pass protection, pick up a respectable FA just in case Moeaki gets hurt again.

Here is what's left on his current contract:
2012: $7.4 million (+ $28 million option bonus due 3/8), 2013: $8.4 million, 2014: $9.4 million, 2015: $10.4 million, 2016: Free Agent

...

That 28 million dollar bonus is THEIR sunk cost if they chose to pay it.

Everything else is what the new team would be on the hook for.

Basically a 4 year 35 million dollar contract.

If they don't pick up the bonus, he's an FA, no contract.
