Bill Hicks, George Carlin, Mitch Hedberg, Pryor & other funny ones who've passed on.

I love Bill Hicks. He is my favorite all time comedian. Carlin, Pryor and Hedberg are up there, as well.

All of the good ones, are dead, it seems... yet Carlos Mencia and Dane Cook are perfectly healthy.

Here is a set by Bill Hicks that David Letterman banned from his show about 16 years ago. I'd never seen this set until moments ago. Solid stuff.

Feel free to post some of the funniest bits from your favorite comedians that are no longer with us. We could all use a laugh, right?

Sam Kinison or GTFO.

gblowfish 03-09-2011 12:09 PM

Hicks was a brilliant political satirist and way ahead of his time. If he had lived, I could easily see him on the Daily Show, much the same role that Lewis Black has now.

Carlin was a master of wordplay. His vocabulary skills were unreal.

Pryor was supposed to be Sheriff Bart in Blazing Saddles, but the studios were afraid to cast him. He ended up writing many of the funnies bits in the movie with Mel Brooks.

Hedberg was a great observational comic, and had a funky delivery. It was his own unique style, much like Stephen Wright has his own unique deadpan style.

I personally miss Rodney Dangerfield. He had a great life, and IMHO, was the greatest standup to ever live.

Greg Giraldo was good, but not in the class with these guys.

My problem with Hicks was never his politics. It's that he was so damn dark. I understand that you have a message and I am well aware that it's not a perfect world - but I have a hard time with comedians that take everything so seriously and are so prone to going into some pretty sinister places.

I don't think he'd have been Jon Stewart. I see him becoming more like Bill Maher. Maher was funny at one point in his career, but now he's just kind of a bloviating shithead that takes himself entirely too seriously.

I loved the older Carlin. Was just looking at his old sets the other day.

Hedberg is vastly overrated.

He's unquestionably not for everyone.

I think Pryor's fairly overrated myself. His best bits are great; I don't recall the name of the special after he set himself on fire, but it was brilliant. Unfortunately, the vast majority of his bits are just saying "pussy" a lot and being crass for the sake of being crass. It's not funny, it's just vulgar. Dane Cook tries to pass off talking fast and loud as being funny - well Pryor was often content with passing off cussing and using exaggerated inflection as comedy.

I love Carlin, I like Kennison, but Pryor just grates on me because it's just the same thing over and over again.

Everyone's different w/ comedy, I certainly won't begrudge anyone for not liking Hedberg.

BigMeatballDave 03-09-2011 12:21 PM

Carlin is probably my all time fav.

Bill Hicks is unfunny.

I remember watching Hicks' performance on Dangerfield's show and thinking how different he was from the others. IIRC, Robert Schimmel (RIP), Dice Clay and a few others that went to become "famous" were on that same show.

Hell, a lot of people like Cook and Mencia. Those guys were funny for all of 2 minutes. To each his own.
My current favorites are: Daniel Tosh, Louis CK, and Mike Birbiglia.

Though it seems odd to have those 2 as your favorites - they couldn't be more different, really.

Carlin in the latter years was a little too political and a little too angry for me. He definitely changed. But he still had his moments. I enjoyed this one.

so what was actually wrong with that Hicks video on Letterman? I didnt know that video was modern Letterman looking back on it until the end (I skipped the beginning with the older lady).

At the end Letterman himself couldnt even justify why it was banned especially by todays standards. Was that Letterman indirectly admitted he might have been a douchebag 16 years ago lol?

If you haven't heard Hicks' "Dark Poet," get your ears around it some time. It's painful but fascinating to hear the man try to work against a crowd that clearly can't stand his presence.

I think the problem with Eddie Murphy is that he's such a complete uptight prick now that he simply doesn't want to deal with the "little people," and that includes performing in front of them. I don't even know if he could connect with an audience anymore. His last stand up show, Raw, wasn't nearly as good as his first two, and it was mainly just a two hour rant about him getting ****ed over by some woman. And that was back in the late 80s.

Yea, i think R rated Murphy is dead. Dude has mad so much money, he probably has no fire or desire to even try anymore....and when he did a few years ago (Dreamgirls) he acted like he got screwed over by the Academy.

I saw an interview he gave around the time Dreamgirls came out, where he addressed the issue of doing standup. He just basically said, I've moved on, get over it." He came across as a real douche, too, and that was with a camera on him.

I wonder if Dane has any Eddie Murphy stories?

The Amazing thing about Eddie was how much of his humor was singular to him. Read his jokes on the page and you're like 'Wait, what?'

But hearing him deliver them you're in stitches and lots of times you aren't even sure why.

99.9% of comedians could never make 'Cramden and Norton have gay sex' funny if they devoted their life to the bit. But 20+ years on, I hear in my mind 'Waaaah, hummina hummina' and still chuckle a bit. And like I said I'm not sure what's funny about it, except that Eddie made it funny.

There aren't a lot of people where you can actually see the 'asshole' ooze off them.

Murphy's way up on that list. I get the feeling that Sean Penn is a complete prick and Dane Cook's right there with them both. Bale and Nicholson seem like they're probably dicks as well.

And I get the idea that Matt Damon would be one of the coolest guys to have a beer with of all of them. And I know kutcher tends to rank on the 'douche' lists, but I honestly don't see it. He seems like he knows he's kindof a goofball and relishes it. To be a prick, you have to take yourself way too seriously. I don't think he does.

gblowfish 03-09-2011 02:51 PM

If we're talking about "passed on," then we're talking about a lot of great classic stand ups from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Ones who come to mind:

Foster Brooks
Redd Foxx
Charlie Callas
Alan King
Henny Youngman
Jack Benny
Lenny Bruce
Flip Wilson
Buddy Hackett
Bob Hope

And don't forget impressionists like David Frye and Frank Gorshin.

I think Larry Reeb "Uncle Larry" is funny, but he's not dead yet.

There's some people who are "actors" now who used to be stand ups beside Eddie Murphy. Guys like Steve Martin, Albert Brooks and Kevin Pollack.

Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock are tweeners. They're still both doing stand up, but also do acting gigs.

Guys like Leno, Letterman, Craig Ferguson, Jimmy Fallon and Jon Steward are kind of in their own odd "TV front man" category, but all have been stand ups at one time.
