For the lib whose name escapes me, who argued at length about Gore's service and Bush's lack of same.

Source 'The Federalist'

Gore spent less than five months of a typical twelve-month tour in Vietnam. He spent every minute of his "tour" as a "rear-echelon member"

He was assigned as a noncombatant information specialist" to the Army's 20th Engineers Brigade headquarters at Bien Hoa military base near Saigon.

Gore's immediate supervisor in Vietnam has confirmed that his posting there came with explicit instructions to baby-sit him and make sure he was never in any danger. That fact notwithstanding, Gore has claimed to the Washington Post that he was "shot at" and "spent most of my time in the field." He later told the Baltimore Sun that "[I] pulled
my turn on the perimeter at night and walked through the elephant grass and I was fired upon."

On May 22, 1971, not five months into his "tour of duty," Gore was given special dispensation and a one-way ticket home to attend divinity school in Nashville. He dropped out of Vanderbilt shortly thereafter.

So much for Algore's military career.

He said in his acceptance speech that even though he served he was nothing more than one of those military journalists (I'm assuming like the type we saw in Full Metal Jacket). But hey, at least he was there. No one from the other side can even say that much...

Chuck - You dare to assume that the man who created the internet would lie to us? http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

BroncoFan 08-27-2000 08:10 PM

DaWolf, He may have said same in his acceptance speech but it is a far cry from what he had said at an earlier event. I don't have the direct quote or date/event here, it is in a book in my office. I will be glad to post it tommorrow evening. The truth is; at one event, he was LYING!

"Those who would give up a little freedom for a little security deserve neither."

I believe ya. Actually to me, it doesn't really matter. All of these candidates strike me as wusses. I still don't think George W holds a light to McCain, but that's just me. I guess we gotta vote for someone though... http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

BroncoFan 08-28-2000 05:46 AM

Wolf-I'll still locate the quote for you anyway.

On the candidates here is my view. I have MY OWN values and principals that I live by (there roots being Biblical,) personalities aside I have to look at the candidates and decide which one most closely supports the ideals that I have. I am a Christian who believes life begins at conception, I am a firearms owner and avid shooter and outdoorsman, I am convinced that the money that I make is MINE and what the government takes from me is borrowed from me, not vice versa. With that in mind it shouldn't be too hard to figure which party (candidate) I support. The choice is easy in my view.

Kurt,

Point on your money being on loan to the govt:

Why are the dems so insistent on keeping our surplus taxes and inventing new programs to dump them in? If I sent too much money to anyone else on the planet, I would expect a refund.

KCwolf, what can I say, he's the number two man in the 'most ethical administration in history'. The same administration that has set the record for investigations and convictions of its members.
Has anyone ever heard the story of Bush Sr. abondoning his bomber crew when his plane was severely damaged in WWII? My father was in the war and said it was widely known at the time...of course the media wasn't 1% of the monster it is today.

I'm not making this up...where could I even begin to try and dig up an old article about it on the net?

BTW, how much time did Jr. spend in Vietnam?

Clint,

You bring up a good point, but I don't think that is the point that was being made in the topic.

I was under the inpression after watching that wonderful produced film at the DNC, Gore served on the front lines braving insurmountable odds.

I do know Bush was the pilot of an Avenger torpedo bomber. I think it had three crew members total. His plane was jumped by a Zero and shot down. Bush was picked up by a sub, but I can't remember if any other members were as well.

If you want to research it, Naval Archives would be a good place to start.

I find such a story very unbelievable however. The lib media would've had a field day if there was an ounce of credibility in it.

Thanks BK. The point of this topic was that their respective service is a draw. Neither is a medal winner, neither faced live fire, and neither was ever in any real danger. However only one of them is potraying his record otherwise.

Chuck - Yes, it is amazing how our great War Hero can take all the credit of our great successes over the last 8 years, yet blame every disaster from 1600 Penn Ave on someone else. He has learned teflon coating well from his boss and mentor.

Da,ck,Russ; here is the quote from the Washington post in 1988 that alGore made during a campaign visit; "I was shot at...I spent most of my time in the field." Wahington Post, Feberuary 3, 1988.

Here is another; "I carried an M-16...I pulled my turn on the perimiter at night and walked through the elephant grass, and I was fired upon."
Los Angeles Times, October 15, 1999
