An NFL rule of which I was unaware......

From Tuesday Morning Qurterback...

...During the contest, the Ravens punted, a Nevermores coverage man touched the punt downfield, then a Kansas City return man picked up the caroming ball and ran. Too risky? NFL Network's Scott Hanson knew the rule: Once the kicking team has touched a punt downfield, "nothing bad can happen to the receivers," who hold the option of result of the play or possession at the spot of first touching. So if a return man picks up the ball in this situation and then fumbles, it doesn't matter. Kudos to Hanson for knowing a rule that broadcasters usually muff.

Heads up play by Copper. I wonder if he knew that rule?

SNR is proud of his son.

They should pick up the ball and then start punching people.

Mitch mentioned it on the radio broadcast as well, but not in this detail. This rule has been around forever.

I was excited about the play, and said that it was heads-up by Copper. But I did wonder if it was risky at the time. He gained like 25 yards.

So anyway, I learned somthing.

I'm sure it has, but it's pretty rare that you see it come into play.

I heard about this rule a while ago when a punt hit the kicking team in the back, etc. and a guy picked it up so the announcers mentioned it. Interesting rule. Seems like one of those rules you'd almost never use.

This play happens at least once a season. Only casuals don't know about it.

Pasta Little Brioni 10-10-2012 08:51 PM

Of course Copper knew the rule. He has the biggest, most chocolatiest brain in the West.

That just gives our a-hole fans more reason to wrongly cheer

I was aware of the rule, but I'm curious to find out what would have happened if Copper would have lateraled the ball and then that person fumbled it.
