Dr. Z's 10/6 Mailbag titled "Scheme, Not Players, is K.C.'s Problem" has some interesting reading regarding our team. Analysis of players on both O and D, and a summary that reads:

"In sum: I've seen two teams run on this defense, which was embarrassing against Seattle. Individually, the players are not that bad. The scheme seems to be the problem."

Pretty even analysis, IMO.

Ok, I liked the article until I got to the end and realized it was all critique ~ and no solution.

He makes evaluations of our players, and then states that the scheme is the problem... but he never says why! He never says what the scheme should be. He never even says what the scheme currently is!

I can write articles like this guy.

Luz
is he always so irresponcible?...

Interesting, a critique by a man who admits to only seeing two of our games. He also apparently doesn't follow the Chiefs either. Anyone who doesn't know why teams don't throw at Hasty isn't aware of the Chiefs. (Or football in general I'd say)

That said, he is right when he says we need to stiffen against the run. Getting Clemmons back should help because it allows Browning to move back inside. Also where's Ransom? I thought run stuffing was his forte.

HankStram 10-07-2000 12:05 PM

The guy's an idiot. Why don't teams throw at Hasty, well maybe it's because he's a Pro-bowler and there's a rookie in Dennis on the other side, and I don't see were Hasty's is a poor tackler. Do they just give those jobs to anyone and if so were do I apply?

Gaz 10-07-2000 12:09 PM

"for some reason teams seem to be staying away from James Hasty; why, I don't know"

I took this as sarcasm. Am I giving Dr. Z too much credit?

gaz
thinks we all KNOW why Hasty is not being challenged.<BR>

Gaz 10-07-2000 12:10 PM

As far as tackling is concerned, I can only think of one player who consistently shows me that he KNOWS how to tackle.

gaz
could use Patton as a textbook on "How to Tackle."<BR>

KCWolfman 10-07-2000 12:22 PM

Gaz - Tackling,,, my main complaint for the last 3 seasons.... and yes Patton is my favorite player.

Gaz, IMO if that was sarcasm, it didn't come across well. But point taken.

I'd like to critique this quote:

"Finally, big Chester McGlockton. I would not have him on my team. He'll come up with a dazzler every now and then, and live off it for the next few series. I see him quitting on plays. I can't figure him out."

Spoken like a man who hasn't watched the Chiefs closely this year. Compare that with what Gun said the other day regarding why Hicks is near the top of the league in sacks:

But I think he's real smart and uses (DT) Chester (McGlockton) the right way. Chester has certain things about him and Eric knows that. Being as smart as he is, he's able to play off of Chester and get to the quarterback.

"Chester goes up the field so hard that he collapses the pocket and Eric is getting skilled at playing off of him, meaning that he can take an inside or outside rush off of Chester."

So I guess Chester is useless (now that was sarcasm http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif ).

This guy has more opinions than my would be mother in law. It doesn't take a whole lot of talent to sit back and create one-line critisisms about people. Any of us do that for free.

Donnie Edwards has never looked weak against the run. Chester has been colapsing the pocket like a bulldozer, I'm not even gonna comment on the Hasty one. According to him everybody is mediocure but Dan Williams. Whatever!

____________

Opinions are like a$$holes. Everbody has on and nobody else wants to hear it.

Unless your a Chiefs fan of course

I think these so called "experts" get their information on most teams the same way we do, by watching the highlights on NFL Primetime. It's a pretty good show, but like all the other national media, it gives little attention to the Chiefs. I've often watched the Chiefs win games, watch this show later, an come away wondering how the Chiefs could have won the game, given the way the highlights seem to be so much of the losing team's.
His take on Chet is still based on what he did in Oakland the last couple seasons he was there (or on reading observations from Clint or Cannibal) If he had actually watched any Chiefs game, without a predisposition to dislike Chet, he would have seen a player fighting every down.

Dr. Z is an analyst who comes about his opinions honestly. If you make his All-Pro ballot--as T-Rich and Gonzo did last year--that means you played well in the games of yours he saw. On average, he studies about half of the games every year.

Dr. Z knows that Hasty is a good player. He mentioned him last year in his annual column about his All-Pro voting, for example. I took his comments to mean that Hasty should be tested more, as he's older and not as big a hitter as he used to be. Personally, I don't agree, but then again I watch every Chiefs game and Dr. Z has only seen 2 so far. I respect his opinions and appreciate the fact that he usually attaches to them some measure of how much or little information they are based on (e.g. how many pertinent games he's seen).

I don't think there are many analysts around who know more about more teams in the NFL than Dr. Z does. I look forward to his column every week and especially enjoy his annual All-Pro ballot column. You can find an archive of his columns on the cnnsi.com site.

I'm with Dan on this one, Dr. Z is one of my favorite anaylsts. He shows a knowledge of the game few others do. He's not always right, but he appreciates the details and hard work of players in every position.

As for our scheme, it's pretty simple. We tend to a deep zone, and have our d-linemen go for the QB on ever play. The penetration is great on passing plays, but it lets other teams O-linemen get on our LBs, and gives great opportunites for cutback runners.
