I remember reading about a sub-atomic particle that comes in matched pairs. Regardless of distance between the two items in a pair they are oppositely charged, one positive, one negative. When one is changed the other changes instantly. Using those you could have instant communication at any distance.
I thought it was quarks, but some cursory research on the 'net doesn't support that.
