I have yet to figure out what point they are trying to make with this 'story'.

The team is in a rebuilding mode and they are exploiting an emotional and frustrated coach.

So what if he said he thought about quitting. He's not.

homebizy 09-06-2000 04:10 PM

I listen to WHB over the net and the suck. Last year I was able to get kmbz and at least Fortune(sp) was a real sports guy that didn't get his ratings by trying to find someones week spot and beat it into the ground.

BroncoFan 09-06-2000 06:36 PM

Greg, If this isn't a story why has it made nearly every major national sports media outlet? Does 810 drive all of those national outlets? Don't think so.

DaKCMan AP 09-06-2000 06:49 PM

Kurt - because it was reported out of context and was actually in a speech that was used to motivate the players, WHB refuses to see that.

Cannibal 09-06-2000 06:59 PM

This is why coaches want to keep things in the locker room, because anything brought out of the locker room gets taken way out of context. There may have been some guys that were taking the loss hard and Gun said something to make them all know that the losses are all hard and personal for each of them, and they should be, and that you've got to work through the negative feelings and look forward to the next challenge, you can't spend too much time getting down.

Then the media goes and spins it like Gun was saying "Well guys, I was thinking of quitting on you but I changed my mind. What's on the agenda today?"

WarPaint 09-06-2000 07:22 PM

When in doubt, blame the media and hire Rufus Dawes to set the facts straight.

Things to remember:

1. A Chiefs player leaked the story to the media. The player obviously did not respect Gunther and his personal lockerroom speech.

2. Gunther should not have told his players that he felt like retiring until his wife talked him out of it. Yes, it does show that he is human and takes losses hard - but everybody already knows that. His speech raises the issue that Gunther doubts his own coaching prowess and his ability to get through to his players. If he doesn't believe in himself why should his players? If he feels like quitting after one loss what about after two losses, three losses?

Sorry, no matter how this is spun... a coach telling his players he thought about quitting is a mistake... if I'm a player sitting in that locker room it bothers me that my coach would quit on me...
Leadership and strength comes from the top, you do not place doubt in your players head...

Gun should have kept it to himself and given the team and himself Monday off... I like him, but if KC doesn't start winning, he'll lose control of the team ala the Kerry Collins situation a few years back...

The Boys on the radio are getting just want they want: An audience. You guys rip on WHB but tune in every day. They must be doing something right.

htismaqe 09-06-2000 08:10 PM

And Packfan...

You rip on Carl and the Chiefs everyday, but obviousely continue to follow them closely.

What I still dont understand is why in the world Gunter felt that strongly that his 9-7 team should beat the 13-3 Colts. Confidence is one thing, ignorance is another. I could understand if he were this broken down after the Bears opener last year. Not this one. The Colts are the class of the AFC. The Chiefs are in the middle of the pack. Everyone knows that. Except Gunter.

DaKCMan AP 09-06-2000 08:16 PM

packfan - Maybe because we almost beat them last year. Just a thought.

sometimes 1 + 1 does equal 2.

htismaqe 09-06-2000 08:17 PM

Ya know Ken,

Hopefully the team doesn't know that.

If they would have executed (caught the interceptions and not dropped the passes) we would have beaten the class of the NFL last week.

Luz
for a guy that claims to know more about football than ditka, you don't seem to understand a whole lot...

Morph,

Almost doesnt count. Their team went 13-3. The Chiefs went 9-7. The Chiefs lost their best defensive player (Derrick). The Colts gained a year in maturity. They have a legit coach. We have Gunter. The Chiefs looked horrible in preseason, the Colts looked pretty good. I commend the Chiefs for being in the game, albiet at the benefit of the Colts self destructing. Winnig one of the first two would be a small miracle for the Chiefs. Goals are nice, but its important that they are realistic.

dabreeze 09-06-2000 08:21 PM

Coulda Shoulda woulda Luzap. If the Colts dont fumble on the five yard line or throw the ball right to Edwards on the 40 yard line, the game is a blowout.

Bottom line is the Chiefs lost. Fair and square. The two teams play 100 times and the colts win 80 of them. They are very good team. The Chiefs are a very mediocre team. Sorry to be the one that breaks the bad news to you.
