A Browns fan is staying at the house

The wife has a friend from work that is staying with us a few days. Wife tells me not to talk about politics becasue friend doesnt know much about it.

My candid and tried answer is "Fine, how bout them Chiefs?" To which the friend answered that she was a die-hard Browns fan. My chin hit the floor.

#1 they exist...I thought they were like unicorns, big foot or Nessy.
#2 I'm talking to one.
#3 In my house with witnesses.
#4 I thought I had it bad.
#5 I guess I should appreciate being a Chiefs fan.

She lamented and I shared her pain. The discusion didn't last very long. What do you talk about, which team is crappier? I did ask when is the correct time to start wearing bags on our heads.

So, admittedly, I don't know much about the Browns and their history. When was their last playoff win? Have they won a Superbowl? Who are some of their better players in history? In the last 10 years, has their suckage been as bad as ours?

Help educate me so I can be more informed and have a better conversation tonight.

BTW, my wife was correct as to the politics stuff. She doesnt know crap. She's a HUGE Obama fan:)

tooge 10-03-2012 11:40 AM

Here ya go;

So, you're a browns fan?
So you're kind of used to takin it in the tailpipe then?

Now move in for the threesome. Oh, also, Tits or GTFO

Bewbies 10-03-2012 11:41 AM

The Browns have an amazing fan base. I think they have the largest fan club in the USA.

Lucky bastards got a new owner this year too.

Our playoff win drought is longer than theirs. They have 1st round QB starting for them and looking good. They should pity us.

Dr. Johnny Fever 10-03-2012 11:55 AM

Tell her the old Browns are really good and won a Super Bowl not long ago. See if she swings at you.

L.A. Chieffan 10-03-2012 11:57 AM

I think it's been the same amount of time for both franchises in terms of playoffs wins.

L.A. Chieffan 10-03-2012 11:58 AM

And they've drafted a couple of first round qbs.

L.A. Chieffan 10-03-2012 11:58 AM

And they got rid of RAC and Quinn who are now on our team

Molitoth 10-03-2012 11:59 AM

Welp, the chiefs have better looking uniforms....

That's about it.

Cleveland 95 airs tonight on NFL Network!

http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sp...-cleveland-95/

Bill Belichick’s final season with the Browns will be documented tonight at 8 on NFL Network’s “Cleveland ‘95″ documentary.

Here are some Patriots-related snippets:

Belichick: “We wanted a tough, hard-nosed, blue-collar football team. That’s what Cleveland is and that’s what we wanted our football team to be.”

Belichick: “I felt bad for that team, the players and the coaches that were working so hard with less than no support. The owner was nowhere to be found; he was in Baltimore. It kind of felt like you were on a deserted island fending for yourself.”

Belichick: “We got better every year, our program improved every year. I wish that it would have turned out a bit differently, but we tried to do what we could and the best that we could for ourselves, for the team and for the city of Cleveland. I have no regrets about that.”

Eric Mangini: “There was that sense of we had turned the corner. All of that time, all of that work, all of that effort — we were poised to make that next jump.”

Scott Pioli: “Those years in Cleveland, those teams, those people impacted the NFL. It impacted a lot of football.”

Ozzie Newsome: “When I won in 2000 (with the Ravens), I owe a lot of that to Bill Belichick.”

Holladay 10-03-2012 12:01 PM

As to the fanbase, she mentioned that there was 4 major Brown clubs/groups in Las Vegas. She lives 5 months and 29 days in Cleveland and 6 months and 1 day in Vegas.

I was surprised about the Vegas fan base.

chiefzilla1501 10-03-2012 12:12 PM

Know lots of browns fans. Awesome fan base. While Bengal fans disappear if the team is . 500 browns fans show up in droves to watch every game.

The browns hVe had it way worse. They've had three super bowl runs cut short by either incredibly stupid coaching or an elway 97 yard drive. Add in model selling out the team then watching that team win the super bowl a few years later in Baltimore. Add in that no Cleveland team has won ANYTHING in what, 50 years? That includes baseball, football, basketball.

So when you think kc is bad, remeber... Surprisingly it could be worse. Way worse.

Holladay 10-03-2012 12:15 PM

I was grinning at all the piihb quips and thread sucks without pics.

Like I said, best light that I saw her was fire light and 60. I guess she'd be ok if you like grandma.

In order, and off the top of my head so don't hold it against me...

Last playoff win is probably 1994 against the Patriots. Belichick beats his old mentor Parcells. In 1995 the season falls apart when, after the third or fourth game, owner Art Modell announces the team is moving to Baltimore. In 1996, after BB is fired and using a pick he had got when he did his patented trading down, the Ravens pick Ray Lewis, then go on to win the Super Bowl in 2000. Then the Pats (with the Browns' old coach) win 3 out of 4.

So basically imagine this:

Hunt says he's moving the team to Los Angeles, then fires Romeo.

In 2013, using a pick that the 2012 Chiefs used when still in KC, draft possibly the best linebacker ever. In 2016 they win the Super Bowl.

Meanwhile, Romeo Crennel, now HC of a different team, wins 3 out of 4 Super Bowls in another city.

Oh, and 15 years later (2027) you still haven't been to the playoffs, Crennel is commonly regarded as the best HC in football, if not the best ever, and is ALWAYS in the playoffs.

THAT is what it means to be a Browns fan...

(side note: I always used to laugh at die-hard Red Sox fans over the misery and woe. They don't know misery. Look at the Chicago Cubs you self-centered bastards. Not only no WS in a longer period of time, but a helluva lot less talent and playoff/WS appearances).

Browns never won a SB. Never even BEEN to the SB I don't believe. The Browns were THE dominant NFL team in the 50s and into the early 60s, with guys like Otto Graham (50s) and Jim Brown (60s). Head coach was Paul Brown (who the team was named after), who was probably THE best HC in football history (college and pro, he dominated). (side note: Art Modell FIRED both Paul Brown and Bill Belichick, both of whom would probably make the top 10, if not top 5, all time best HC list of just about anybody).

Molitoth 10-03-2012 12:34 PM

For some stupid reason, if the Chiefs moved to LA... I would still follow them.

I wonder how many Browns fans became Ravens fans.
It sure would have paid off.

The members of the Front office and some of the coaches of those Browns teams was just a crazy list of future success in the NFL and/or college:

Belichick
Nick Saban
Ozzie Newsome
Pat Hill
Kirk Ferentz

Assistants: Jim Schwartz (HC - Detroit Lions) and Eric Mangini (no introduction necessary)

Browns and Chiefs fans have a lot in common...

Marty.
Romeo.
Diehard fans of both equally hate Elway.

Chiefs last playoff win was 1993. 3-10 in Playoffs since 1990. Last trip 2010.
Browns last playoff win was 1994. 1-2 in Playoffs since 1990. Last trip was 2002.

Brady Quinn.

Blue Collar towns with amazingly strong fan bases in spite of ownership screwing with them the last few decades.

I hear ya, but I really didn't go overboard there... there are a lot of similarities. Many recall both being strong early on in the NFL... then there was a string of success in the late 80s for CLE and then in the 90s for KC.

The paths since 1993/1994 have been different - yet somewhat similar in a few areas. I think the fanbases actually have more in common than most other combos.

The only way to win in the NFL is have a good qb + find a few great football players from the good football player pile.

This is where the quality GM comes in and this is where I am hoping Reggie learned that skill as a member of the Packers management

Time will tell

I kinda like the Browns. I empathize with them in a way I guess. We're both sort of the red-headed stepchildren of the NFL in the eyes of the national media. I also don't think their uniforms are terrible like a lot of people. It takes balls to wear shit brown.
