Anyone else going to see Widespread Panic tonight?
:bong:

No. I learned my lesson the last time I farted in a crowded movie theater.
|
I wish....
I have a couple of friends of mine who made the trek from Denver. I thought about going, but I'd like to save my vacation time for other events- like Widespread Panic at Red Rocks! |

It's getting to be a pain in the azz anymore 'cause their three night stand here at Red Rocks sold out in minutes. It pisses me off 'cause 95% of the tickets were sold to out-of-staters via mail order. WSP needs to reconsider it's mail order 'cause the locals can no longer get a freakin' ticket- and just about the only place they have a problem with this is Red Rocks 'cause everyone just HAS to go see their favorite jamband at Red Rocks. It' BS. Back in the days when the Grateful Dead was tourning, you didn't have this problem for the shows wouldn't sell out until the day before the show when all of the traveling hippies would saunter into town. At least then you could still get a ticket. Nowadays, it's BS. Four years ago, I was able to do the three night stand at Red Rocks- NOW, I'll be lucky if I can score a ticket. |
i have to tell you, as a jamband fan, that i've never seen the fascination w/ panic...
i did see them a couple years ago though at starlight on sunny's birthday and it was a hell of a show...they opened and closed w/ van morrison songs, send your mind and it stoned me, respectively. they really don't improvise much outside of the basic framework of their songs...kinda boring if you're going to see some heavy jamming...also, i like houser much more than their current guitarist... now umphrey's mcgee, there's a band that can jam...check em out at wakarusa june 16-19, www.wakarusa.com it's gonna be huge! bp |

If you're going to Wakarusa, I may be going myself. The bands to check out there are: Donna the Buffalo, Railroad Earth, Blueground Undergrass, and MOFRO- four damn good reasons why I may be going. |

As for Hauser's guitar playing, it's blasphemy since the poor guy is dead, but I never really much cared for it. That single "whirlwind" effect that he used never did it for me. George, on the other hand, I really like. I haven't heard him much with WSP, but I loved him in Beanland, a small band that he and JoJo used to play with out of Oxford, MS. Wakarusa: That is a sick freaking lineup. I'm really impressed with the way they've branched out from the whole jamband scene. Wilco, Son Volt, Junior Brown, Neko Case, Ozomatli, Calexico, etc. Not to mention more jambands than you can shake a spliff at. If you decide to check out the stage in the campgronds, be sure to check out Eckobase. They're good friends of mine from Fayetteville that are playing. Really cool guys. |

But, I agree- that Wakarusa line-up is outstanding. I'm afraid if I go, I'll never get any sleep for three days 'cause I'll want to watch every single band. |

if you check out some live umphrey's, you'll find that they make spots in their sets for pure improv...these improv sections sometimes turn into songs, depending on how successful they are in the framework of the show my waka list: wilco conspirator son volt samples galactic umphrey's big metal rooster mofro sci mule carbon leaf split lip rayfield junior brown jay farrar acoustic the list goes on and on... can't wait for the show... bp |
also, i wasn't implying that a band has to play songs like dark star to be improvisers, but there are many other songs that the dead played that could result in far out improv
playin' in the band other one scarlet -> fire etc bp |

Improvisation is merely a jazz term meaning the music isn't planned, but rather performed live by feeding off of each other's music- hence, the music can go anywhere it wants to. All jambands do this, and to say WSP doesn't, is pure fallacy. This is the one reason why Miles Davis is considered a genious in what he does- he simply has a group of musicians go into a recording studio and they start jamming with no songs in mind. Van Morrison even did this with his famed album, Astral Weeks. He had the musicians go into a booth and they were to feed off of Van's singing and his songs....this is improvisation as well. But, you can't compare WSP to DSO 'cause you're really doing nothing more than comparing WSP to the GD. |

once again, i'm not saying that panic doesn't improvise, i'm just saying that in a genre with bands like the dead, phish, umph, moe (all bands that tend to leave the chord structures of songs behind in favor of free improv), panic tends to play it close to the best and remain within the bounds of the melodic structure of their tune...once again, this is improv, but much less adventurous, and to me, a lot less interesting. bp |

What I mean is, like you're saying with Dark Star- that if they were to play U.S. Blues tonight, and then play it a week later, it will be a different U.S. Blues, and then a week later, it will be yet a different U.S. Blues. |

though i wouldn't say that u.s. blues ever changed much... the dead needed to have that on the fly versatility...it's necessary when you have band members that nod off from drugs constantly...everyone needed to be on their feet.. bp |
