Lollapalooza 2013

Anyone going to Lollapalooza this year? If so, how you feeling about it? This will be my 6th year in a row going and I am excited about a few bands (will be seeing NIN for the 7th time, QOTSA for the 2nd time, 21 Pilots is a real unique group, Kendrick Lamar, Grizzly Bear, The Cure, etc.) All in all though, I am feeling "meh" about it...I wish my impression(s) of the supporting bands was better, but hopefully am pleasantly surprised.

If you are not going, do any of you have any input/recommendations pertaining to any of the bands? Thanks in advance!

I'd love that lineup.

Bands you should look up and check out prior to going:
Chance the Rapper (you said you liked KL, so you should like Chance as well. He's amazing. Check out free mixtape AcidRap)
Father John Misty (hard to describe. Member of Fleet Foxes who left and became very different)
Ghost B.C. (crazy metal act)
Frightened Rabbit (lots of hype on these guys)
Local Natives (Gorilla Manor was probably one of my favorite albums that year. Wasn't as jazzed on the followup, but they're still awesome)
Death Grips (Watching Stef go ****ing insane on stage is worth the price of admission.)
Foals (Been listening to the hell out of these guys lately)
Heartless Bastards (I've seen them a couple of times. They put on a good show, and the singer's voice is amazing).
Alt-J (I really liked this album)
Vampire Weekend (probably one of my favorite bands who seem to be getting better with each release. Their new album is fantastic. They can be hit or miss live).
Baroness (**** yes!)

Anyway, those are some that I immediately saw and though, "Damn. I would love to see those acts."

Heh - I just saw Chance the Rapper last weekend. He opened for Mac Miller. I have no recollection of seeing Mac Miller. :D

I'm ambivalent on rap shows, but AcidRap is probably still my favorite (as in I listen to it a lot) rap album of what has been an excellent year in rap.

I haven't been this pumped about rap since the 90's. Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky, Ab-Soul, El-P, Jay Rock.....rap is "coming back" (IMO, anyways), and I love it.

I've heard The Neighbourhood is an "up and coming band." I've got a couple of their songs on Itunes...I like what I've listened to of them so far.

I haven't listened to The Mowglis very much so far, I'll have to check them out.

3 years ago at Lolla, Grizzly Bear put on a HELLUVA show. I couldn't believe how good they were.

I love the Alex Clare album with "Too Close." I downloaded the deluxe version...I like a lot of the songs, but one that sticks out is his acoustic version of "Too Close." That is a neat version of that song, with the piano and all.

Postal Service and Mumford and Sons will be playing at same time. It is completely up in the air in terms of which one I will attend. Mumford and Sons will be packed to the point of it being uncomfortable due to how insanely popular they are right now. And I'm admittedly, not a huge Mumford and Sons fan, but don't mind them. Saw them 2 years ago at Lolla and thought they were ok. I want to go to Postal Service because I like them more and I think it will be more comfortable due to not being so crammed. I'll actually be able to see the damn show. RHCP last year was ridiculous...

The National is kickass live.

Chance the Rapper (you said you liked KL, so you should like Chance as well. He's amazing. Check out free mixtape AcidRap) *I have one Chance the Rapper song on Itunes. Can't remember what the song is called, but think it's pretty cool. I'll have top check more of it out.

Father John Misty (hard to describe. Member of Fleet Foxes who left and became very different) * My bro and I became fans of Fleet Foxes after watching them in the rain at Lolla 4 years ago...my bro burned me a FJM CD, and I like his stuff MORE than FF. I had that CD in my car for about a week straight without taking it out...definitely seeing his show. He was funny at the Fleet Foxes show at Lolla a couple years ago. During a break, he was like, "whoa, I looked at one of the screens and was like, 'who is that Harry and the Hendersons looking beast?!?! Then I realized it was me. That's a weird feeling'"

Ghost B.C. (crazy metal act) * I'll have to check these guys out.

Frightened Rabbit (lots of hype on these guys) * I'll have to check these guys out.

Local Natives (Gorilla Manor was probably one of my favorite albums that year. Wasn't as jazzed on the followup, but they're still awesome) * I have that album as well. My bro burned it for me. They are a Sub-Pop group, right? I like them and will likely see them for the 2nd time...saw them at Lolla a couple years ago.

Death Grips (Watching Stef go ****ing insane on stage is worth the price of admission.) * I LOVE this dude.

Foals (Been listening to the hell out of these guys lately) * I really like what I've heard from Foals, but they play at the same time as Heartless Bastards, which is another band I like. This will be a situational decision when it comes.

Heartless Bastards (I've seen them a couple of times. They put on a good show, and the singer's voice is amazing). * Haha, I didn't notice you included them when I read what you wrote about Foals. Kind of a shitty situation, eh? I missed these guys a couple years ago and regretted it....

Alt-J (I really liked this album) * I have 2 of their songs. What I've heard is pretty unique..can't really compare them to anyone in particular. They'll be playing at same time as Two Door Cinema Club, which has a couple songs I like, but they are playing right before and on same side as Grizzly Bear...a show I refuse to miss, so I will probably go to Alt-J.

Vampire Weekend (probably one of my favorite bands who seem to be getting better with each release. Their new album is fantastic. They can be hit or miss live). * I have "Self Titled" and "Contra." Haven't heard anything from "Modern Vampires of the City." I saw them a couple years ago at Lolla and wasn't blown away, but wasn't disappointed. They were enthusiastic and seemed to be having a lot of fun. I will probably miss this show because they will be playing at the same time as Grizzly Bear...which will piss my wife off because VW is one of her fave bands and she's never seen them. I may be solo at Grizzly Bear while everyone else is at VW. I thought it was kind of weird that they scheduled those two bands at the same time.

Baroness (**** yes!) * I'll have to check these guys out.

* A couple of other bands that I am intrigued by are; Bright Light Social Hour, Ben Howard, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Dada Life, The Lumineers, Matt and Kim, Frontier Ruckus, The Vaccines, Imagine Dragons, O' Brother, Wild Country, DllV and Atlas Genius.

* Really, really stoked about this band, Twenty-One Pilots. I've never heard a band that sounds quite like them. I would highly encourage anyone to check their shit out. If you do check them out, start with "Ode to Sleep," then go to "Holding On to You," "Trees," "Migraine" and "Car Radio." As odd as this sounds, to me, they seem like a combination of; Queen, Eminem and Ben Folds Five...... GREAT band.

Yeah, I've heard this. I heard part of their show while camping for NIN, but couldn't hear them well enough to develop a legit opinion... My bro is a big fan. I have a couple of their CD's. I like the lead singer's low, monotone voice. They seem to improve with every release from what I've gathered. They play at same time as Foals and Heartless Bastards and the end of their set overlaps with the beginning of Kendrick Lamar, which is a show I refuse to miss... There is going to be some tough decision making around that time.

Demonpenz 07-12-2013 11:40 AM

Local Natives frontman sounds like the guy that sings the Angry Nintindo Nerd theme song.

Haha, I haven't heard of that, but it sounds like it'd be funny.

The Cure puts on a great live show.

I got to see both Kendrick Lamar and the National back-to-back at Bonnaroo, and I wouldn't be too worried about missing some of Kendrick. I'm a huge fan, but I was pretty disappointed with his show -- a lot of really awkward silences and spots where he would just stop and have the crowd rap for him. I've seen the National twice now and both times they've put on an amazing show.

I'm real torn on The National, not only because of KL, but because of them playing at the same time as Heartless Bastards and Foals. Have you seen Heartless Bastards or Foals play? Honest question...because I've never seen them...?

I hate it when rappers do that. I hope he doesn't do that during Lolla. My wife loves KL...that's one of the concerts (along with Eric Church) that she insists on going to, so I probably will have to be early for that one.

Speaking of KL, I LOVE this video. Skip forward to the 2:16 mark. Gives me the chills. I'd love it if something like this happened at Lolla.
