Windows 8 has no free DVD playback

Windows 8 will not play DVD discs anymore, unless you pay for the Media Center pack

Here is something interesting, you may already know that Microsoft
plans to sell Windows Media Center as a separate paid pack, but now
the company has just revealed that Windows 8 will also stop the
support for DVD playback. This won’t be the case of course, if you
upgrade to the Media Center pack that you only will be able to install
if you have the Pro edition of the upcoming OS or installing a
third-party DVD application.

In the announcement in the "Building Windows 8" blog, the software
maker explains that most of the videos play today on the PC and mobile
devices come from online sources such as YouTube, Hulu, Netflix,
Amazon and many other services and it continues to grow in a rapid
pace; in the other hand DVDs and TV broadcast are “in sharp decline”
even Blu-ray is losing momentum on the PC, which translate in to “a
significant amount in royalties” to continue the support for these
playback scenarios.

Licensing for DVD playback just isn't worth the money. That's why they're subsidizing it using Media Center fees.

Totally understand this decision.

Wait - you aren't supposed to be reasonable. You are supposed to go into an anti Microsoft rant. Didn't you get the memo?

Welp looks like I am going to keep Windows ME

When it comes to media delivery, Microsoft is the least of our problems.

Good decision. Windows ME is probably the most stable version of Windows...

Garcia Bronco 05-04-2012 12:42 PM

You can download free shit to do that.

Windows ME has to be the shittiest version of Winblows ever...Windows 3.1 was better.

Unless they are saying that the DVD drives themselves will not be able to read DVD movies (that I don't understand) this is really just useless, just download a free video player that can handle them instead.

This would be correct, as long as they're not doing something to break said 3rd-party video players.

good ... i don't want that media shit on there anyway.

prefer 3rd party apps
