I love the potential that he gives this team.

Quite possible that as the season progresses and going into next year, the Chiefs become three guys STRONG at CB, and we won't need to find more help high in the draft.

Dunta is 100% expendable after we're finished with the season.

BlackHelicopters 09-29-2013 02:53 PM

I want to have Cooper's babies

chiefzilla1501 09-29-2013 02:53 PM

Played great today. Quick question... should this guy play nickel? I feel like he's got the skill set to be a #1 or #2 CB, not a nickel guy.

siberian khatru 09-29-2013 02:53 PM

Reid said he switched from WR in college -- which isn't unusual, but indicates he hasn't played DB all that long.

Psyko Tek 09-29-2013 02:55 PM

him smith, and flowers
we are looking good

KCwolf 09-29-2013 02:55 PM

Great addition off the bench .... guy came in and played more like a vet than a kid.

I'm Hangin' w/Mr. Cooper

Wallcrawler 09-29-2013 03:33 PM

I was like "who the **** is this kid?!?" he's out there on Nicks one on one and blanketing him. He made some bigtime plays today against a proven QB/WR tandem. This kid needs to see the field a helluva lot more often.

BigMeatballDave 09-29-2013 03:42 PM

Dunta should never see the field again.

Easy 6 09-29-2013 04:44 PM

Yeah, this kid has come out of nowhere, did an excellent job on Cruz, he was all over him.

6'2 192 and can run all day with Cruz? I love it.

I didn't even notice it wasn't Flowers in there for a while. What round did we take in? He looked great.

Ragged Robin 09-29-2013 05:02 PM

Dunta should play the slot in the nickel. The first thing that goes for a corner with age is his top end speed.

WE took him in the "free" round. He was a 49er 7th round pick.

RINGLEADER 09-29-2013 05:11 PM

He had a VERY good game from what I saw... really good instincts and no major f-ups.

I would play him outside, for the most part. I haven't really seen him play in the slot, but with his skillset, he is better off outside.

Sutton saw it and put Cooper there and made Dunta completely expendable.

Totally agree.

Would put flowers on the slot and the towers of power on the outside.

Mr. Laz 09-29-2013 05:44 PM

What is doubly good about him is that he is sort of opposite of Flowers.

Cooper seems to be a guy made for the big, fast strong outside receivers that Flowers struggles a little with. He could make easier to chose who gets matched up with whom.

Flowers is still the best technically sound CB we have but i think Cooper could end up being a better match for Austin,Bryant,Thomas,Jones etc.

example: If cooper keeps improving i like our chances better with Denver.

Cooper - Thomas
Smith - Decker
Flowers - Welker

I really hope this kids turns out.

Kudos to our management and scouting department, to snatch him away. I think the 49ers were hoping to put him on their practice squad.

Good thing about Robinson getting toasted was we found out Cooper can play some. Dunta will stick at Nickel, his speed is gone

Not that there weren’t some overwhelming moments for Cooper, a converted wide receiver who started 13 games for Rutgers last season and had one interception, two fumble recoveries and blocked a kick.

He was taken by San Francisco in the seventh round of the April’s NFL Draft and picked up by the Chiefs shortly before the season started, but he wondered whether he would really get a chance to show his stuff in extended stretches.

“You know, when you're a rookie, people don't expect for you to come out and do as much, especially when you’re drafted lower,” Cooper said.

That’s why Cooper feels so fortunate to have landed with a team in the Chiefs who value his skill-set and are giving him an opportunity to prove his worth.

“I’m a bigger guy, you know, a longer guy,” Cooper said. “(This system) always works for those … kind of guys, with long arms and stuff like that. That definitely helps me out a lot.”

Quote:

First of all, Marcus Cooper is a 6’2”, 192-pound defensive back who runs in the low 4.40s (h/t 49ers.com). That kind of physical ability is hard to come by, which is why he may turn out to be a late-round steal by San Francisco.

From a scouting perspective, the measurables are there, and he looks good on tape. Fortunately, this organization relies on the coaching staff’s ability to educate and improve the players on the roster.

Cooper is a long, well-built, physical press-corner with upside at safety, if San Francisco were to request the transition. He fits in immediately because the 49ers need more competitive youth in the secondary.

Moreover, the physicality in Cooper’s game makes this a good match. He is just as capable laying the wood and seems to have a knack for initiating high-impact blows.

When it comes to being a defensive back for San Francisco, Cooper looks the part.
(apologies for bleacher report)

That was the best thing about Cooper - that we actually have a coaching staff that is willing to pull a starter if they are getting their ass kicked. Sutton saw Cruz fly by Robinson and that was all it took.

Hoover 09-29-2013 07:41 PM

Does Cooper + Smith for two second rounders make some of you guys feel better about the trade?

Has to kill teams to see the young guys they cut look good early in the season.

That's an interesting idea. Dunta could be the dime guy or I might like him in the 3rd safety spot over Demps. Dunta isn't fast enough to be a corner anymore but he's fast enough to play safety.

O.city 09-29-2013 07:59 PM

Don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves here, but if he could pan out it would allow you to, if he could, kick flowers inside against the broncos and be physical with welker, with cooper and smith on the outside

tecumseh 09-29-2013 08:00 PM

Yeah, I didn't understand the signing. Let me preface that. John Dorsey, and Reid, both prefer bigger corners, so I understood WHY they signed him for his size, but, he sucks, and has sucked since leaving the Texans.

That being said, Cooper is nice. I thought they were going to keep cooper in SF and let go of Cox. Good for you guys.

We had exactly Flowers and bullshit at CB when Dorsey got here.

Yep, and he put a respectable group together asap.

So glad to see Arenas go, two midget corners out there is a recipe for failure.

They look pretty stupid now, I imagine.

Like, is Nnamdi even playing that well? Their CBs this year seem even worse than last year based on the beginning of this season. They probably could have used some young talent like Cooper waiting in the wings.

philfree 10-01-2013 06:27 PM

It'd be cool if we actually uncovered a diamond in the rough that sticks. We need that.

Mr. Laz 10-01-2013 06:39 PM

He's going to get nothing but more important as the year goes along.

Any team with enough receivers to force us to use a 3rd corner will be a huge problem if we have to go with Robinson

It can't be emphasized enough how crucial it is that he gets up to speed and succeeds.

Move Dunta to safety, he can still hit and with as many safeties we use, there is defenitely a spot for him.

prefer Demps at safety with Berry at least until we see what Commings can do.

move Robinson to 2nd string Bench

penchief 10-01-2013 07:37 PM

I have high hopes for Commings, too. Together, Cooper and Commings have the size and athletic ability to help counter the bigger receivers out there, ala Smith. I think both have a real shot at developing into good players. It's exciting to think what that would mean to a defense that is already really good.

I honestly think this team is getting to the point where it is stacked. The 2014 draft should be drafting talented backups or replacing positions with higher talent. Gone are the days of having too many needs to fill in the off season and draft.

We need to see Cooper get the nickel snaps over the next 5 games to find out if he is as good as he showed in this game.

If he is, Laz is right.

Cooper and Sean Smith on the outside coverage with Flowers in the slot will be a good matchup against the Donkys.
