The country music repository thread

I've considered doing this for a long time but often figured I was the only one that cared. Kyle DeLexus' thread has shown me that's not the case.

If you have an appreciation for country music feel free to use this as a place to post videos, news, personal favorites lists, concert experiences and anything else country related. Old or new doesn't matter. Just have fun with it and ignore the haters.

Naturally I have to post the greatest country song of all time as a starter.

If George Jones ever did a better song it would be this.

I can't listen to the Van version anymore, and I'm a big fan of his. ZBB is one of the few groups where everything sounds better live.

You know....one guy who wasn't mentioned but I used to love to listen to was Roger Miller. He had both the crazy songs like "Dang Me" but also had some pretty nice ballads that never got much play because it seemed to be outside what people looked for from him.

King of the Road was a great Country classic.

Blake Shelton will be at the Oak Park mall this weekend. I'm going to try to get the wristbands needed to go see him.

I'm also excited about Dierks headlining that Yallapalooza thing at Livestrong. I've wanted to see the stadium but hate soccer so it'll be nice to check out the stadium and seeing one of my favorite current country singers.

Mosbonian 06-26-2012 08:21 PM

While I agree that "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is probably considered one of the greats, here is one that some of the old-timers consider the best song...

It's wierd that as many times as I've posted country stuff in the Random Music Video thread I never knew until today that you were into Country. Of course I've posted a lot of rock vids there too.

I've never been in that thread that I know of. Born and raised in SWKS so country is probably 80% of what I listen to. You almost had to even if you didn't like it there.

I like just about all music though. Anything but that stuff where all they do is scream.

Easy 6 06-26-2012 08:35 PM

It wouldnt be right to not throw in some Lo-retty, bought 2 of this album, one for me & one for Ma.

This project made me really respect Jack White, he loves country music & really put her back on the scene...

The Random Music Video thread probably has more of my posts than the Royals threads... but it's close. If you have signatures visable you can see my favorite rock artists but I've posted about 100 country vids in there too.

I love all styles of music I just look for honesty in it.

What part of SWKS?

Mosbonian 06-26-2012 08:41 PM

And my favorite group of all time....a couple from them. First very early Statler Brothers

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1s8nRL2bPCU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And then one from the early 70's....

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/tiz-ycwCkGI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And one from the Jimmy Fortune-era Statlers...live since the original video seems to be hard to find.

He is one of those singers that when you listen to him, he sounds just like he does on the record/tape/CD.

I used to put on my headphones and listen to his Greatest Hits album to relax. A very soft mellow voice...

You're a new friend of mine. I've seen Don twice and you're right... he's just like he is on his cd's. Plus I love him because our voices match so I can sing along with him without a problem. Don is the man. One of the most under-rated singers/songwriters in country music history.

Yep. I need to get out that way again soon. There's something great about an area where you can go down to the river and set up a shooting range and no one really cares. My shooting time has been way down since I moved to the KC area...I hate paying to do something I used to do for free.

yes Mosbonian thats the Sawyer Brown song I meant. Love it.

Not trying to be a bragger... hung out with Diamond Rio last summer (goes with the job) at our county fair. Brought them all station t-shirts and corn on the cob (long story), had dinner with them, then introduced them at the show. Marty Roe (singer) is a really good dude. We spent about 30 minutes talking about baseball and old music.

My fav DR song...

That's one of the great songs of all time IMO.

Among the modern Country Artists both Carrie Underwood and Martina McBride are my favorites...here are my favorites from them.

I must say I'm pretty out of the loop on current country. I seem to go through phases where I'm really liking new artists or not so much.

Earl Thomas Conley also had a great song in Too Many Times with Patti LaBelle(?).
I always enjoyed the parodies (ala Weird Al) of country songs...Ben Coulder (aka Sheb Wooley) did a lot of them.
I also like the fact of the different genres within the genre. The bluegrass sounds of Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Allison Kraus to name a very few. Allison's CD with Robert Plant is excellent.
The rockabilly of Sun records, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash etc really expanded the definition of country music.
Then there's the "old-timey" country ala the Carter Family, Hank Thompson, Little Jimmy Dickens etc.
Then you have Ernest Tubb, Jimmy Rodgers for Texas Swing.
Females you have Kitty Wells, Patsy Kline, Brenda Lee, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton and many more. Rosanne Cash did a CD called The List that contains songs that her dad (Johnny) wrote down for her when she was 18 years old and he told her these are the songs that are true classics. Excellent CD.
You have your "orchestral" country with Eddy Arnold, Marty Robins etc.
The Lounge sounds of Ray Price...
Plus the Bakersfield sound of Buck Owens (followed by Dwight Yoakum).
Then there's the Hag...Merle was always pretty much his own man. Really like his I am What I am CD that's semi-recent.

It's a great genre that does in fact deserve a thread of it's own. Good job Dr. Fever!

Yeah, that's just one of those once-in-a-lifetime type songs. Singing it still sometimes makes her cry onstage; tons of Youtube videos told me that. See, told you I was obsessed.

Yep. I need to get out that way again soon. There's something great about an area where you can go down to the river and set up a shooting range and no one really cares. My shooting time has been way down since I moved to the KC area...I hate paying to do something I used to do for free.

When you do shoot me a smoke. Maybe we can meet up.

I REALLY like that song. Very well done IMO.

Bah. I'm with you on most of that but I really can't stand that song. And it's not like it was good and then got played out, I never liked it.

Maybe I'm getting cranky as I get old.

Radney Foster- geek cowboy. Great song though.

Out of all that I love Earl Thomas Conley, Tammy Wynette (her last album was really great and very under-rated btw), Rosanne Cash... Tennessee Flat Top Box... c'mon what a great song.... Eddy Arnold, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Dwight Yoakam (the man), Buck Owens, Alison Kraus and of course Johnny Cash. There's a lot of win in there.

If you like Rosanne Cash you really need to look into The List. One of her best efforts since 7 year ache. She really is a great singer.

I also forgot to mention the instrumental country of Chet Atkins, that man was one of the absolute best guitar players of all time. Roy Clark was also a heck of a picker.

Now you've done it. That's another all time fav of mine. Radney is still a great writter for other artists and that song is to me about me and my ex.

Foster and Lloyd was a great duo before Brooks N Dunn came along. Very soulful.

Mosbonian 06-26-2012 10:17 PM

You know...I noticed that we haven't had any Buck Owens.

I've heard The List. Great stuff. Rosanne has gone the way of too hip for country radio... like Shelby Lynn, Lyle Lovett and Mary Chapin-Carpenter. Fringe/alt country.

Dr. Johnny Fever 06-26-2012 10:23 PM

KS Smitty check this out. Tammy Wynettes last hit from 1990. I don't think she lost a thing. Great song.

Yeah, that's probably why I don't listen to radio. Some of the new stuff I get is from reading reviews in Rolling Stone and other outlets, the rest just because it's a new CD by (enter name here).

Hank III has been an interesting trip. Shooter Jennings is one that I really like and think he has improved and defined himself better with each new album.

Some of those guys just went way over the top with those suits. It was great. Gawd, now I'm remembering some of the records my parents had when I was a kid. Buck, Waggoner/Parton, Kitty Wells, Haggard, Jones... I think they had Eddy Arnold too but I hated that bastard for some reason. I didn't hear much, if any, pop or rock music in the late sixties because this was what was in our home.

If you had to really press me, my 2 favorite male current favorites are Brad Paisley and Alan Jackson (George Strait is still my all time favorite).

AJ has so many I like but here are 2 of my favorites...

This will probably sound stupid but I appreciate you guys and gals sharing this love with me. I didn't know if this thread would just die or not. It looks like it's going to live long and prosper.

I love rock n roll too and all kinds of music bit it's nice to have a place to share with other people who appreciate country... so thanks.

Thanks! I'll look him up. Been planning on getting the new Willie album, just haven't done it yet.

chefsos: I was never a big Eddy Arnold fan either, although I do like the lyrics of the songs he performed, just too orchestral for a redneck like me I guess.
