One of the most beloved 80's cartoons is getting a reboot on Cartoon Network in 2011.

Jun 02, 2010

This morning we received a FedEx package with a large poster enclosed ... and I almost wet myself. Too much information? Well, after reading the following press release from Warner Brothers Studios - I think that you may have the same reaction.

(June 3, 2010 – Burbank, CA) – Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) has begun production on “ThunderCats,” an all-new animated series for Cartoon Network, based upon the iconic 1980s action classic. “ThunderCats” is the newest series from WBA, joining “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” which was recently renewed for a third season, and the following forthcoming programs: “The Looney Tunes Show,” “MAD,” “Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated” and “Young Justice.” The announcement was made today by Sam Register, Executive Vice President, Creative Affairs, Warner Bros. Animation.

“In addition to being Warner Bros. Animation’s first anime series, ‘ThunderCats’ marks our most ambitious foray yet into fantasy,” said Register. “The realism and dynamic visual style we’ve achieved are sure to thrill viewers, and the cool weapons, vehicles and technology should help the show appeal to a diverse audience.”

The 21st century reimagining of the series marks a creative collaboration between WBA and Studio4°C, one of the most vibrant animation studios in Japan, with credits including “The Animatrix,” “Gotham Knights” and “Halo Legends.” WBA is working closely with Studio4°C, utilizing the latter’s expertise to give the “ThunderCats” characters a new cutting-edge look while remaining true to the compelling storylines and mythology of the original series.

“We at Studio4°C are excited to be in this creative partnership with Warner Bros. Animation to bring ‘ThunderCats’ to life,” said Eiko Tanaka, President and CEO, Studio4°C. “This collaboration combines the strengths of our two companies – high production values and great storytelling – toward reintroducing this classic fan-favorite to a new audience.”

Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, “ThunderCats” characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

“ThunderCats” is executive produced by Sam Register (“Teen Titans,” “Ben 10,” “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”). Michael Jelenic (“Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” “Wonder Woman”) and Ethan Spaulding (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”) are the producers.

why can't they just let shit stay in the 80s where they ****ing belong

kaplin42 06-03-2010 09:50 AM

While I definately agree with the thought that some new material needs to be thought up rather than just revamping everything again and again, I am kind of excited to see this. If they don't make it super cheesey like the Batman: The Brave and the Bold show, then this could be awesome.

Because then they would have to come up with original ideas, and most of the good ones have been taken.

MOhillbilly 06-03-2010 09:57 AM

thundercats, voltron, & mask were the weaksauce of 80s cartoons.

Transformers, Thundar the Barbarian, & GI Joe owned em.

Never heard of it. Did it involve a giant robot fighting giant monsters with an awesome plasma sword?

Not really, but it had the whole multiple vehicles separating out then combining into one thing going on.

These were their vehicles:
http://www.chronicsite.com/gatchaman/mechs.html

It was originally titled Gatchaman in Japan, then they changed it to G-Force for the release in America.

Hmm, intriguing, but I must say not as cool as 5 freaking robot lions combining into one huge robot. It was hilarious how every episode was pretty much the same once they got over the exposition with the 1st two episodes, lol. Still good, though.

Even as kid, I remember thinking -

"Why doesn't the monster just attack the lions during the 3 minutes it takes them to form Voltron?" and "Why don't they just form the "Voltron sword" first instead of getting their butts kicked for 5 minutes?"

Like you said, every episode followed the same pattern with little deviation.

Yeah, lol. The only deviation was the monster. And I agree about the whole "umm, just form the Voltron right off the bat" thought process. I wish they had one, JUST ONE, episode where the lions got the job done. I loved how those lions looked, as a kid.

Voltron's ****ing sword is 3 times bigger than Prime. Let's stop kidding ourselves, it wouldn't even be close. Shit, I bet that little nerdy kid with huge glasses in the green lion could take Prime by himself. Don't get me wrong, I love Transformers, but what you're saying is LAUGHABLE.

Meh. The appeal of the Thundercats (to me) is/was how seriously the characters took themselves. It's incredibly cheezy with cheese on top. Then you throw in the fact that they rode around in what looked like giant plastic toys to help with marketing...pretty weak. I'm still fond of the show for nostalgic reasons but it was crap. As Moho mentioned, Thundarr the Barbarian was much better.

Thundarr is one show they should remake.. But it would have to be on adult swim to do it right.. Or hbo ala the spawn series..
