It was interesting to hear Yost reference All Star weekend last season in the press conference introducing the new guys. That weekend really showed Glass that if he puts something out there, we will come.

The Orioles were incredibly good/lucky in one-run games. You outperformed your pythag ratings by 11 games, the most in baseball by far. It was nearly 2x as big a difference as the next-closest team (San Francisco).

16-2 in extra innings. (next closest was 11-5. 20 percent gap in WP%)
29-9 in one run games. (+10 compared to league average)

Those are ratios that are highly unlikely to be repeated. Yes, Baltimore had an excellent bullpen in 2012... but even a LITTLE slippage from that group could blow up a lot of what made Baltimore's

It's perfectly possible Baltimore will win just as much in 2013, but the O's would need to be a much better team to do that. It's also possible the O's are actually BETTER in 2013 than 2012 but have a worse record.

You're going to need to trim this down to 140 characters if you expect him to understand it.

Spot on. Math is very clear that the O's are in trouble if they don't improve their actual team.

Thats really only because the rosters arent set yet. Free agents need to be signed, players traded, they usually wait till spring training to release computer simulations. It doesn't mean CAIRO's useless, just that its too early because other teams aren't set yet.

Generally, about $20-25 for good seats, mid to high teens for OK seats, and $5 to sit on the grass past the outfield wall. Lots of people bring a blanket or two and do that. The Surprise KC/TEX facility is actually one of the newer, nicer ones. The best facility, by far not even close, is Salt River Fields at Talking Stick (ARI/COL). Its not fair to compare to that though, its Arizona's spring park and they spent a ton on it. That place often sells out, especially the Arizona games. You must buy tickets way in advance for that, and even the $5 grassy "seats" fill up before the game. The SF Giants park and the Cubs park also sells out sometimes. One of my favorite places was the Angels park (Tempe Diablo), just because of the scenery past the outfield while watching the game. They do have a lot of bleachers, though. Other people might have their favorites, but if I had to pick only 3 parks to see, I'd go with Surprise, Tempe Diablo, and Salt River Fields.

Its a freaking desert, so don't be surprised if it gets a bit cool at night, and do not skimp on the sunblock during the day. (especially at the CWS/LAD facility. Everything reflects light at Camelback Ranch and there's almost no shade, you'll roast if you don't have sunblock) Also, if you've never seen the Grand Canyon, you might want to spend a day there, bring a jacket because Northern AZ can be a lot cooler than Phoenix.

edit: here's a picture in each of those parks

Are there affordable family accommodations near the south rim, or do you have to stay near I 40 for something less than $100 a night? I need to travel on the cheap!

No idea. I started in Phoenix, drove there early in the morning, spent 7 or 8 hours walking around taking pictures and being awestruck, ate at a restaurant in a little village south of grand canyon catering to tourists, then drove back to my hotel room in Phoenix that night.

Fun fact: there's a huge elevation difference driving from there to Phoenix or vice-versa, your ears will pop.

Need a laugh?

Here's a trade proposal from everyone's favorite Orioles forum:

Jake Arrieta
Zach Britton
Chris Davis
Xavier Avery

for

Mark Teixeira (I mean, he stinks in New York, so they'd totally trade him to a division rival)
Gary Sanchez (I mean, he's ONLY a top 30 prospect).

Two failed pitching prospects, a 4th OF and a guy with 40-HR power are totally enough!

Infidel Goat 12-13-2012 12:21 PM

Why are they talking about trades? I thought they were already a lock for the World Series.

He said he was a cheap minor league option that was producing, would cost the fraction of what Gload was costing, and at WORST would put up similar production... at best would have multiplied it.

Guess what? In 2010 Kila got 180 at bats and stunk it up.. he still outproduced with those limited AB's what Gload was doing with nearly 400 AB's.

In 2009, they brought in an expensive Mike Jacobs to give us less production than what it would have cost to have Kila do that.

That's BAD GM'ing.

Actually, Rany favorably compared Kila to Ryan Howard of the Phillies, and Rany did hell of a lot more than just say Kila was better than Ross Gload. I read all of those columns at the time, and Rany eviscerated the Royals for not playing Kila in a manner very similar to the way in which he is eviscerating them now for trading Wil Myers.

Rany should write a column called "I was dead WRONG about Kila Ka'aihue, but I'm RIGHT about Wil Myers". I haven't seen that column yet.

Rany's problem is that he doesn't have to suffer any consequences for the decisions he demands that the Royals make. His ego is completely out of control. I've been reading Rany for at least 5 years, and I'm getting pretty damn sick of his constant negativity. This was a trade the Royals had to make. Getting James Shields and Wade Davis is a very good move for this team. Forgive me if I don't worship at the altar of Rany Jazayerli.

Funny you think he's negative all the time. Royals Review thinks he has gone soft.

I think he's on tilt regarding Wil Myers. Overlooking some statistical stumbling blocks on Myers while ignoring some statistical evidence that strips his argument against Shields.

If you objectively look at Shields' state from the past two years, taking into account Pitch F/X data, you can see what the differences are (I talked about them earlier, but cliffs: Fewer fastballs, especially two-seamer. A little more changeup and a LOT more curve and slider).

THat change in approach discounts a lot of the troubling statistics from early in Shields' career.

Rany is fine as long as he agrees with the latest move made by Dayton Moore. But Rany has been telling us for the past several weeks what a mistake it would be to trade Wil Myers for James Shields. His article at the Grantland.com site sounded like an article written by someone who was furious that his sage advice had been ignored.

Don't get me wrong. I think Rany is an excellent writer and an extremely knowledgeable fan, and that's why I've been a regular reader of his for so many years. But every now and then he gets just a little bit too impressed with himself.

Maybe this is just a little bit of homerism in me. Maybe I'm just pissed at Rany because I really want Shields and Davis to win around 30 games between them, and I don't want Rany raining on my parade. But I just think Rany crossed the line in the Grantland article.

Basically, yes. Learning something/adjusting/change in approach all mean the same thing.

He went from being primarily a 4-seam, two-seam fastball guy who mixed in changeups to being a guy who throws his 4-seam fastball and changeup at nearly identical rates, and uses his breaking pitches much more than previously.

Exactly, he changed his approach. Sometimes pitchers have terrible statistics their first few seasons before figuring it out, that is still weighted in the career ERA. I don't think there is a more useless stat than career era if it isn't weighted towards what the pitcher has done recently.

Greinke: 3.77 Career ERA
Shields: 3.89 Career ERA
Dickey: 3.98 Career ERA

If Rany was the baseball savant he carries himself to be, he'd be in an MLB Front Office right now. Not treating people's skin.

Don't get me wrong...I'm sure he's a great Dermatologist, but given his obsession with baseball, you know he'd kill to be working in the bigs. If MLB people respected his opinions, he would have been offered a position at some point along the way.

His day job pays a hell of a lot more than some faceless analyst role. His opinions would become proprietary trade secret, he'd have to go dark and offer his insights and opinions to the public a lot less. With his blog, he's a lot more high-profile and well-known than he would be working for anyone.

I don't have any problems with Rany, guy just gives his honest opinion and its an educated one. He is just another blogger though, people treat his blogs like the baseball bible. Just because the team and Rany don't agree doesn't mean we are screwed.

Not accurate.

I meant he isn't a club official or something, he obviously has more background than a lot of bloggers. Doesn't change the fact that he writes a baseball blog about his opinions, and he isn't infallible. We shouldn't beat him up when he is wrong or freak out when the team and him don't agree on something.

This. Derm in a big city like Chicago is second only to plastics in LA in terms of desirability in his profession.

He can see tons of patients, prescribe expensive medications (or inexpensive, doesn't matter because of sheer volume), perform expensive procedures, etc etc and not have to spend too much time with pts.

Derm is $$$$. That's why it's extremely hard to get into.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal
Sources: #Cubs in serious discussions with Anibal Sanchez. Deal could be 5 years/$75 million. #Tigers still a threat.

Bob Nightengale ‏@BNightengale
Breaking: The Chicago #Cubs have just signed Anibal Sanchez.

Shogun 12-13-2012 04:44 PM

Glad hes out of the division

DeezNutz 12-13-2012 04:44 PM

5 for 90 would have done it for the Royals. No chance he turns down that kind of coin.

The Hamilton deal made me think of something. When Trouts deal comes up, are they going to be able to resign him?

Maybe thats who Glass plans on putting in RF in a year or two?

This is the Royals were talking about. Far more likely to deal Pujols/Hamilton than Trout if he can keep getting better imho.

LMAO

siberian khatru 12-13-2012 05:11 PM

Will the Tigers go after Dickey now?

Maybe the Royals should pre-emptively make another play for R.A.

siberian khatru 12-13-2012 05:12 PM

Somebody on Royalsboard floated an idea of Cain, Crow and Ventura to the Mets for Dickey.

So we would put out 2 below average players in CF and RF?
