Start Date in Media Center

Am I the only one seeing this?

Reaper16 01-22-2013 11:20 AM

I see it too.

loochy 01-22-2013 11:23 AM

WE NEED TO KNOW THE START DATE GUYS

morphius 01-22-2013 11:24 AM

Yup, I'm playing with it here for the lounge. Something I always wanted to do.

Mr. Flopnuts 01-22-2013 11:28 AM

I dig it.

Dallas Chief 01-22-2013 11:38 AM

Not complaining at all, but doesn't the OP already show that info?

Yes, but we get a lot of old bumps, and well, it is annoying. Media center it isn't a big thing, but the lounge...

Fish 01-22-2013 11:44 AM

Yes. Along with the number of current thread viewers.

INFO OVERLOAD!

Not at a glance.

This may aid in not mistakenly replying to really old threads that get bumped by ThigLyfe

Yeah, I dropped that one. Still trying to tweak it as best I can...

People are not going to pay any attention to this once the newness wears off tomorrow. Why even add it/

because I've wanted it for years, and this last week forced my hand. I'd like to do something more advanced with it, but this was the only plugin I could find that was even close to what I want.

Cool idea! Didn't even consider the old bump factor.

007 01-22-2013 12:06 PM

How about we put a big blinking logo on each thread that was over a month old when bumped. That is the only way people will notice it. Just sayin

I absolutely DO NOT want to know the start. LMAO

This blows....trolling people with old thread bumps will be much harder now.

If you can code it I'd be more than happy to do it, lol. What you are saying is exactly what I want to do, but would take me a long time to code.

This forum has a warning pop up when you click on a old thread.

It is more a case of pulling the date correctly, getting into the code in the right place, etc, etc. The only part that might be easy is the if statement. Oh, and I would NEVER use blinking though, I think that is an internet sin.

Agree, but blinking is the only way users will notice it the way it is set up now.

check out that second link I posted about a pop up warning when people click on a old thread.

Both of those would be annoying.... I think if people get annoyed with opening old threads, they'll get used to looking at the Start Date. If not, they won't. I don't think it needs to be something that sticks out above everything else, or worse, requires interaction.

Right, I don't want to do a pop-up.

So why change anything? Like I said only a few users are even going to pay attention to that field at all. You will still see the same old thread bumps.

blinking was only an idea. What about just plain color code it? Old threads will show up in red or something.

Frosty 01-22-2013 02:08 PM

I'm not sure why this is an issue. Personally, I always open threads via the "go to first unread" icon. If an old thread is bumped, I just immediately go to the new post and it's obvious that it's a bump.

I wouldn't say it is always obvious upon reading the first post from the bump but you can easily figure it out after reading a few more posts.

Buck 01-22-2013 02:22 PM

I'm fine with it. Doesn't really change anything but the look.

I figure that if I don't go to the OP, it's a bump.

well yeah, but that could be a bump from yesterday. We are talking OLD threads. some people bump them for the fun of it and make their reply so bland that it isn't always immediately obvious.

No big deal to me because you quickly figure it out within a few posts anyway.

morphius 01-22-2013 02:40 PM

removed the hour/minutes piece off, I think it looks a little cleaner.

Gotcha. I guess I'm CP too much as I usually recognize a thread that's only a few days old. LMAO

I generally can spot a old thread bump as well, but every now and then, somebody sneaks one in there that nobody catches for about 25 posts.

Hootie 01-22-2013 08:55 PM

I'm not a fan but my opinion doesn't matter. Think it adds clutter.

I kind of agree, but whatever. Doesn't really matter to me.

-King- 01-22-2013 09:44 PM

I don't like it. Clutters the forum IMO.

Buck 01-22-2013 09:44 PM

Is it possible to move the start date next to the OP's name or in the next box over where the last post time is indicated?

Or to where the thread views currently is. :)

It was just one of those matter of time things. Had been a while since I've dived that deep into the code.

I like the idea of having some kind of a bump warning. I hate it when there's an ancient thread that's bumped and people don't realize it.

I'm not a huge fan of this execution, but I'm not sure what better way there would be to do it.

morphius 01-23-2013 07:54 PM

at work is fixed now as well

Personally I would much rather have the pop up, that way I know right off the bat that it is an old thread.

digger 01-24-2013 09:03 AM

Why not use bold/unbold for new/old threads?

Pop ups and blinking are the two biggest no-no's in web design. I like ya a lot, but do the world a favor and don't ever design a web site :). It is just the first step in trying to figure out how to implement it. Ideally the table in which the thread link is in might just have the word "OLD" or "BUMP", or a small icon marking it as such. Maybe a different colored row marking it as old... All of the plugins that other people have built just have a nice line stating that the thread is old above the OP, which I'm guessing 99.5% of would scroll right by.

WoodDraw 01-24-2013 05:01 PM

The text just blends in with the user name. After a couple of views, no one will even look at it again.

shit, I have no desire to design a website. Just throwing ideas out is all.

morph's trying to find a way to make it only show up for threads that are older than a certain number of days. That would clean things up quite a bit.
