Libertarians

I was walking home one evening and came upon a clearly depressed man standing at the edge of a bridge, looking like he was about to jump. I called out to him to wait, and ran over to see what was the matter.

"It's this country," he lamented. "It's falling into ruin and there's nothing I can do about it. The election was the last straw. I don't want to live on this planet anymore."

"Well cheer up," I said. "We're all in this together. Say, are you a conservative, or a libertarian?"

"A libertarian," he said.

"That's great!" I said. "See, you're not alone. Are you a free-market libertarian or a libertarian socialist?"

"Free-market libertarian," he said.

"Me too!" I said. "Paleo-libertarian or neo-libertarian?"
"Paleo-libertarian," he said.

"Hey, so am I!" I said. "Chicago or Austrian school of economics?"

"Austrian," he said.

"Me too," I said. "Hayek or Rothbardian strand?"

"Rothbardian," he said.

"Same here," I said. "Are you a consequentialist or deontological libertarian?"

"Consequentialist," he said.

So I said, "Die, statist scum!" and pushed him off the bridge.

LMAO

Alternate ending...

I said, "Die Statist!" Then persuaded him, to jump off the bridge consistent
with the non-aggression principle, to jump off before he could use the state to aggress against me.

What I really get out of this joke is that apparently you're not the only libertarian that obsesses over labels.

You also need to rent a sense of humor.

Recycled Emo Phillips denomination of churches joke from the 80s.

I always find this type of anti-intellectualism to be amusing. "Labels" are language, and language matters in politics. People who eschew labels only do so when it suits them to play dumb.

Labels are also short and seldom, if ever, fully accurately describe a person. However, they do make it easier to define a person for your own, often purposefully misleading use.

Indeed. Amnorix is one of the worst offenders with his "isolationist" and "neo-isolationist" stuff during election seasons. He's against using labels except for when he's for them.

If you're dealing with an reasonable person, it's a easy way to make what can be a reasonable generalization. But with someone like BEP, it's like the "one drop" rule. If you think an idea is good, but it has 1 drop of socialism in it, then that makes you worse than Stalin.

You're an idiot. I bet you suck a bjs too.

Eh? Me? Don't think I've ever called anyone a "neo-isolationist" in my life. I rarely toss labels around, other than very, very broad ones.

I think it's one thing to call someone a "Republican", and other to try to brand with them some kind of highly granular sub, sub, sub categorization. The OP really exemplifies exactly how silly it gets, and how libertarians seem to truly love trying to treat political beliefs like biological classification.
