Bill Maas was on 610 this morning still saying we are going to get Lovie, even after this stuff was coming out.

Does this guy know anything other than blow, guns and hookers?

moving to 1 gap

i googled it too

So I assume that the 1 gap is a more aggressive, attacking D whereas the 2 gap is more read and react?

I would rather have Mangini. And since we are this close to this D, Maybe they contacted him, but he wants to stay in the studio (cush job) or is waiting for another HC job.

Meh - Sutton.

Mediocre at best in NYJ when he was the DC, no better when he was the LB coach and a clear 3-4 candidate.

I was really hoping for a 4-3 guy with an actual track record of sustained success.

Sutton doesn't appear likely to bring anything to the table. He may not take anything off it (hard to say), but he sure doesn't look like a guy that's going to give you anything more than you already have. He's essentially the DC version of a game managing QB.

yup, basically...

CaliforniaChief 01-11-2013 09:36 AM

So he's interviewing, got the job, and now is interviewing again?

One problem i have with this is whether or not Houston will be underutilized in this scheme. I know the one gap asks the weakside backer to rush a majority of the time, yet asks the strongside to cover a lot. This does change in the nickle package, but i wonder if it means well try and recruit someone else to play there on first and second down..

So, switching the D to a more attacking style does not excite you in the least?

We should get more production out of Houston. Fewer drops into coverage.

There was never a question that we were doing away with the 2-gap, IMO. Nobody outside of the Patriots tree really runs that tripe anymore.

The 1-gap is going to require a couple of personnel changes anyway, so I'd have just as soon gone wholesale and made the conversion to the 4-3. That or I'd have preferred to see a 3-4 coordinator that actually had success with the 3-4.

This guy has Dabol's resume.

"The strongside OLB is in charge of the C-gap and the outside in the run game and is used in man coverage over 80% of the time on the TE"

I think you'll find Houston will be asked to drop a lot.

True on the scheme but that was because of the talent he had in Baltimore and the comparative lack of talent in New York. If he takes the scheme verbatim and doesn't change it to the talent then he would suck regardless of scheme he runs. Houston should be fine, worst case is he moves his position to match

With a 1-gap, I almost wonder if Hali shouldn't be moved to DE and Houston switched over to the Will.

(Or maybe we should've just gone to a 4-3 anyway with Hali and Houston on the line and Poe kicking ass as an under-tackle....{grumblegrumble}
