Dvd Burner problem

I've had my burner since the end of January and I've never had a problem with it.

Until Today.

I was trying to backup Love and Sex for my Fiancee (it's some romantic comedy for all the pervs that thought otherwise) the movie encoded fine and the burn process stopped and when I ejected the disc, there is a weird ring around the disc. I tried another disc and the same thing happened. I've never had one coaster before this.

The Ritek media I have is normally very reliable.

What can I do to fix this problem? I'm running Nero with DVD Shrink and have a NEC burner.

Here is the error I received:

Have you updated your burner driver?

No, I didn't.

Didn't think I need to since it worked right out of the box with no problems.

I didn't update mine either for a year. Then the new encoding techniques caught up and I started making coasters myself. My particular burner uses alpha suffixes to show how many updates have been made. I was at "m" and my manufacturer was up to "u". Since the update, not a single issue.

How do I find an update for this burner?

Firmware Updates

The Bad Guy 04-02-2005 04:05 PM

Wolf,

Thanks a lot for hte update.

When I click on the program, click run, the dos screen comes up for a second and then goes away.

Did the flash work if it does this?

elvomito 04-02-2005 07:16 PM

you need to run it from your own dos window to see what it is saying.

Bad Guy I would recommend that you not update your firmware quite yet. As you see the flash is beta and if you install it and it messes up your drive you are focked.

Also this is a fairly new drive that NEC has produced hence no new firmware updates yet. Wait until the firmware is finished before updating it.

I just bought this drive 2 weeks ago and has worked great right out of the box. Great drive and there is no need to update quite yet.

Just my IMO.

As far as your problem try burning the DVD again with a new disk you might have had a bad disk. I use the same type of disks as you and luckily I haven't had a coaster.

htismaqe 04-02-2005 09:07 PM

NEC should be releasing the firmware for the 3520 on May 1, 2005. After that, there should be a non-beta RPC1 firmware available.

I would wait until then to patch.

And one more thing -- you should run the firmware update from a bootable floppy. It is a pure DOS program and won't work well in a window.
