PROPLUS.MSI?

I recently ran CCleaner on my old desktop and now Excel won't open. When I try to open it, it does some Windows installer thing and asks for the Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage disk, which of course I don't have. It's looking for the file in the thread title. Word and Powerpoint still open.

Any ideas, please? Thanks.

Best guess... One of the files required by Excel was infected and CCleaner deleted or quarantined it and you are hosed without it. May want to check CCleaner log and see.

I have no idea what that is.

Can I just do a system restore?

Torrents are files that let you download software "illegally" but since you already own MS Office legally it really isn't an issue for you to download a copy to repair what you have.

You'll need a BitTorrent client like http://www.utorrent.com/ then you just search on google for the torrent you want. Like so... http://thepiratebay.sx/torrent/53678...vec_Frontpage_[_French_] (don't mind the French part)

Then once you have the file burn it to cd as an ISO (come back here if you need instructions on how to do that) and you should be good to go.

you can certainly try! it "should" work but often doesn't

phisherman 08-08-2013 04:14 PM

Office XP? Whoa. I haven't seen that version in ages.

My guess is that CCleaner erased the original vendor MSI that Office would normally use to repair itself. Unless you can find install media, or another version of ProPlus.msi on your computer, you're probably SOL. Have you tried to search the hard drive for ProPlus.msi? You might try to check the c:\windows\installer and see if you can find a copy of it there.

If the restore doesn't work, I'll just buy a new version. There's a 100% chance that I'd **** that process up! :)

Yeah, it's my trusty old Dell desktop. Gotta be approaching 10 years old now. It came with Windows 98, I think!

I searched the HDD. It's gone.

Donger 08-08-2013 04:18 PM

Oh, and I found out the reason why I can't find the disk: the wife took it upon herself to clean my office while I was gone recently. She found my stack of old CDs covered in dust AND THREW THEM AWAY.

I have a Blackberry 9700 boxed up in my garage that is more powerful than your computer.

Time for a new one, I would think.

NO! It's almost like a pet at this point. I do remember thinking "WTF would anyone need a 70 GB HDD" when I bought it.

LMAO

Donger 08-08-2013 04:38 PM

Whoa, here's an interesting twist...

If I try to open another Excel file while the installer thing is running, they open.
