What do you spend on fresh fruits and veggies a week

One thing my wife and I don't really budget is our groceries. We tend to shop a few times a week and buy only the next two or three meals at a time. So I don't have a good feel for this.

I'm trying to do the math on joining a local CSA. What would you say you spend a week on fresh fruits and veggies?

Dayze 06-26-2013 12:36 PM

not much.
I'd probably say $10?
dpending on what we're having for dinners etc

Donger 06-26-2013 12:36 PM

Probably in the $50.00 to $75.00 range.

mr. tegu 06-26-2013 12:37 PM

We probably spend about $25 on next week's garbage.

Prison Bitch 06-26-2013 12:38 PM

$50

tooge 06-26-2013 12:39 PM

Probably about $50-$75

saphojunkie 06-26-2013 12:42 PM

Less now that we're growing them.

Fig tree, lemon tree, lime tree, orange tree, peach, plum, olive.

Zucchini (huge - size of a man's leg below the calf), bibb lettuce, romaine, basil, rosemary, thyme, japanese eggplant, yellow squash, habeneros, poblanos, red and green bell pepper, roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, large heirloom tomatoes, spinach, artichokes.

Fire Me Boy! 06-26-2013 12:52 PM

I'm in. Send to my house please.

do you really save any money?

tooge 06-26-2013 12:57 PM

My family eats a ton of fresh fruits and veggies. We do the CSA thing during the summer at the local farmers market. I have a fairly sizable garden as well, so I grow a lot of what I eat too.

blaise 06-26-2013 12:57 PM

Around $40 probably.

KC_Lee 06-26-2013 01:04 PM

$25 - $40 every two weeks, do a lot more frozen veg (due to cost) than fresh. Most of our fresh veggies come out of the garden.

ptlyon 06-26-2013 01:06 PM

At the farmers market this morning I spent $11.50 on 3 bags of snap peas & 1 bunch of radishes

We do a lot of frozen veggies, too, as the "fresh" ones aren't too fresh anymore by the time they make it here. Fruit, potatoes and lettuce are the main produce items I buy, though I have no idea how much I'm currently spending.

CrazyPhuD 06-26-2013 01:08 PM

$0 I eat food, not what food eats! :D

NewChief 06-26-2013 01:08 PM

Probably $50. I think the advantage of a CSA would pay off in other parts of your grocery bill, though. If you have the CSA produce on hand, you're going to use it (at least you should). This is going to force you to make dishes featuring the vegetables, which then reduces cost in other parts of your grocery bill.

Renegade 06-26-2013 01:10 PM

About $200 a week. We eat a bunch of fresh, and that is all we buy at the store. I buy a 1/2 a beef and a 1/2 hog from a friend and make this last about 1 year.

I find I spend more at a Farmers market than I do the local grocery store. I grow what I can, but the deer and squirrels continue to win

DaKCMan AP 06-26-2013 01:14 PM

My grocery bill each week is around $30 and about 65-70% of my grocery purchases are fresh produce. So... $20.

Donger 06-26-2013 01:14 PM

My wife will only eat organic veggies, and she asked three tomatoes recently. I was stunned when I saw how much they cost per pound. Stunned as in "You've got to be ****ing kidding me!?"

That's clearly what I said. You can literally take what I wrote and lay it over what you wrote and there would be no noticeable difference.

That being said catsup, or ketchup, is still not as good as cat soup. Especially with some great organic tomatoes.

Green smoothie is about as far as I go in that direction. Not a fan of juices. Kale, pineapple, and banana blended with some ice is awesome, though.

Hell no! The Vitamix rocks, way, WAY better than just a blender. And if your wife makes smoothies, they're notably better in a Vitamix.

The bigger question is Heinz or Hunt's?

I used to be a Heinz man all the way. Once Hunt's put out their natural, no HFCS version, I prefer it. Heinz is soooo sweet, where Hunt's has a subtler sweetness and a spicier (not spicy hot) profile.

Neither. Simple Truth organic. We switched to it a few years ago, and forgot to take a bottle on a camping trip. So, I had to run out to find some. It wasn't available, so I just got Heinz. It was so sweet that we had to scrape it off the weiners.

I got a jar of homemade ketchup from the Mennonites farm stand many years ago when I was in Missouri.... holy balls was that awesome ketchup. I never found it again, and I've never been able to make it. I'd pay handsomely for more of it.

I like Hunts better than Heinz. And though Hunts was writing, "no high fructose corn syrup," on the bottle they seem to have stopped. And I think if you check the back they list some other sweetener.
I almost never eat ketchup, though. It's kind of gross. Especially when it dries on a plate.

You have to get the "100% Natural" version to get no HFCS.

They switched their entire line away from HFCS a couple years ago, and then went back. Now you can find one version that's "100% natural" without the HFCS.

Frosty 06-26-2013 02:34 PM

Heinz is the better Ketchup, IMO, and you can get Simply Heinz if you want to avoid the HFCS.
