Any Adobe Illustrator experts here?

I am very new to A.I. But I have received CS6 for my Norooz present and I'm trying to clean up the edges of a black on white (and some grey) logo (JPG file) by saving it in .ai and using the 'Image trace' tool. It cleans up the edges pretty well but two problems are occurring here:

1- The grey part vanishes when I use 'Image trace.'

2- There are some hard corners that I want to keep, but when I use trace it does unwanted softening but replacing the hard corners with curves.

How can I get around these problems? Is it some sort of setting that I need to change in either or both cases. Is there a better tool than 'Image trace' to do the job.

I'm doing this for a friend who needs it ASAP. The design is very strong, but the presentation is killing me. Help please.

Try converting it to a bitmap

OK I saved the JPG as .bmp and opened it in AI. But I still have the same problem. Am I missing something here?

Trace in as grayscale or color, not b/w.

You may have it trace what it will and redraw the rest.

I came in here, and realized I don't have any idea of anything being said.

I'm slowly arriving at that conclusion. :( But how can I stop it from smoothing hard angles into curves? In this logo it is important to keep the hard angles sharp.

I haven't used AI since I was doing page layouts.

Stick to CS, use the undo button, and play around when you have time.

I'm pretty sure Demonpenz is. I've saw some of his handy work here first hand.

I'd still give him a crack :)

Learn Adobe Illustrator, then try it again.

MS paint is easy. But I have to give this logo in a vector based format.

For future endeavors. This came up recently and I don't have time to learn specific to this one.
