AM Sports Radio Stations

Has anybody ever done a study to find out how many minutes in an hour AM sports radio stations actually talk about sports?

I'd say less than 20 out of every 60 minutes are actually "sports talk." If they're not doing a commercial talking about buying jewelry, it's a divorce lawyer telling you how to get your ring back! Throw in a little porn music wile you wait for the host to get back from the pooper, and nearly 40 minutes have gone by. Add the "sports news update" and there's even less time the sports talk guys have talked sports!

No disrespect 610 and 810 station lurkers, y'all are awesome (ask yourself!), but it's just a question I've had for a while...

Well its actually more like 12-14 minutes of commercials, add another 1 min or so of sports update and then porn music, you are probably getting 43-45 mins of The hosts. Now, if they dont talk sports the whole time thats another thing.

Sirius/XM NFL is pretty great most of the time,I have to admit though I can't get into Gil Brandt although I know he's been around forever.

They also do about 12-14 mins of commercials per hour. It seems longer on Sirius for some reason tho. I think because the sound quality isnt as good as terresterial radio

the am guys here going to and back from a break spend a good 3-5 minutes talking about whatever awesome lunch deal they have going at a particular place.

especially the noon hour.

And then you have the hosts/guests who repeat the same BS point over & over, so how much time is actually spent talking about NEW/FRESH takes on sports issues?

Yeah but thats not an actual "commercial". Thats them giving love to whoever just fed them for free. And it certainly happens more on a talk radio format then a music format only because we dont have time to talk about food, we have to get that Metallica tune going ;-)

Most radio stations like to have 44 minutes of content and about 16 of commercials/news/weather.

I can tell you why they do this as well:
We have a thing called Time Spent Listening. TSL. Most people arent glued to their radios. They are busy, in and out of their cars, their desk whatever. So just because you have heard the same point being made last hour, someone else hasnt. We have ratings that tell us what the avergage time spent listeing is. And I gaurantee you its not 3 hours. its more like 15 mins in many cases.

My drive in from Lees Summit to Downtown isn't usually an hour, more like 35-45 minutes. I'll have to not text for a change and bring my 1983 stop watch and time the content portion... I'm pretty sure it's more commercial than content. Oh well...

Time it. Every 'Commercial" radio station in the country is about 43-45 mins of content. 12-15 mins of commercials and little extras. If a radio station played 40 mins of commercials, they wouldnt be around very long. Also, image production isnt commercials. Thats the little fun shit you hear with the station call letters in it. Thats imaging, not commercials. In other words, thats content as well.

EDIT:
Now, if you are traveling during the time where they are most apt to play commercails, that may be why you are under the impression thats its more commercials than content. For instance, our "Stop Sets' (Commercials), are 6 mins a piece at 20 after the hour and 40 after the hour. So if someone drives everyday from 8:15am and arrives at work at 8:45am everyday, trhen they are going to hear more comercials, then say someone who leaves at 7:50am and gets to work at 8:30. those people will only hear 6 mins of commercials.

At top of the hour, it will be 3 to 5 minutes with ads and the sports news. Take a 4 to 5 minute break around 20 after the hour. On drive time, probably hit half hour mark with news and traffice. Then more ads around 40 to 50 mark. Then top of the hour again.

The FCC is supposed to regulate this.

Lprechaun 02-05-2013 04:53 PM
