The '98-99 Chiefs offense revealed a pattern:
Here's the pattern:
The Chiefs maulball their way to a fair beginning, then opposing defenses scheme to stop the run.
Next, the Chiefs go on a losing streak: 6 games in '98 and 4 games in '99.
After this, the HC turns to Jimmy Raye and says, "what else have we got?" to which JR resplies, "a healthy balance of passing and rushing the football."
Then the Chiefs go on a torrid offensive tear for the final 6-8 games (last two years: avg 360+ yds total offense, 26+ ppg).
Here's hope:
We started out 0-2 and maybe that's as much of a losing streak as we need to open it up.
I know defending Jimmy Raye is very unpopular, but when he is allowed to open things up, the Chiefs offense cooks.
And the palyers themselves have all but said in the media that we need to OPEN up the offense.

Hoping that 2 is as much a losing streak as we need this year.... <P>

John,

Glad you found us! You have been sorely missed!

I have the same hope. But the renaissance does have to start this week. The difference between KC in the second halves of the last 2 seasons (offensively) and the respective first halves is staggering. I don't remember quotes from the players sounding so urgent in years gone by, after just 2 games. Hopefully, as you said, the offense will be opened up immediately, not just in time for a late run at the wild card. I think Elvis is truly frustrated and needs to be given credit for showing such composure in dealing with the media. This offense does have the necessary tools to win this division, and he realises that. There is no way Gonzo should be so completely shut down given his abilities, the promises to use him in motion and in different formations to create mismatches, and the addition of Troy Drayton which should be taking some of the heat off. Whatever 'system' they are trying to operate is sadly inept. We've only created 2 mismatches all year. Our coaching staff vs Jim Mora and our coaching staff vs Jeff Fisher!

Cormac,
I checked out this site at your urging. I noticed that the star BB site is a ghost town. There was actually more action on the Star BB during the offseason. I see that a lot of the regulars are here, so I'm giving it a try. Some regulars consider me a borderline troll, so we'll see.
As for the offense, the point I was trying make (and you nailed it perfectly in your reply) is that the Chiefs offense usually wakes up after a losing streak, and we (hopefully) have HAD our "wake up losing streak" for 2000 already. Our schedule is VERY hard, but the Chiefs have had a great baptism of fire by starting out against the 13-3 Colts and the AFC Champs Titans on the road. KC played very well in both games, but needs to take the advice you mentioned in your reply. I don't know about anyone else, but I LOVE Elvis' new boldness!
Gimmee the damn ball!

KCJohnny - Good to see you over here, a lot of people have been hoping that you might show up. There is some definite slowness in both BB's since the split.

KCJohnny 09-16-2000 09:50 AM

Thanks, Morph, I'm giving it a chance. I know some people regard me a troll, but I'm always good for generating a little healthy debate.
I think that the Chiefs should roll all of their offensive focus onto Elvis Grbac. It is no secret that every team is going to show 8 man fronts for the rest of the season, so why not let Elvis use his weapons to exploit that?
All he has to do is get 3-5 deep balls thrown to Morris and there will be at least 2 TDs right there.

The_Grand_Illusion 09-16-2000 09:51 AM

We can only hope that they begin to open the offense.

KCJ you are definately no troll. We are glad you are here.

Pam

How is jump school?

DaKCMan AP 09-16-2000 09:57 AM

I wish they would have let Morris run the deep route, just chucking it up for him to go and get, in the preseason. Our genius coaching staff failed to do that, and we haven't seen him run the deep routes in the regular season either. He supposedly has 4.4 speed, is 6'3 and proved with that catch against Tennessee that he can go up and get the ball. With that size, speed, and power, it is foolish not to go deep. So far we have only used him as a possession and 3rd down receiver, which should be more of Alexander/Lockett's role.

morphius 09-16-2000 09:58 AM

KCJ - With the 8 men in the box and the double team on Gonzo we should be able to come up with some scheme's that will beat a lot of other teams. The big question I have right now is will the coaches do it.

KCJohnny 09-16-2000 10:10 AM

Pam: Jump School was very tough but I made it by God's grace.

This is the time to let Elvis become the focus of the offense. It can only help the running game. Suppose you knew FOR A FACT that EVERY opponent was going to cheat 8 men up on you for the REST of the season...

...throw the bomb! We have a guy who can catch it now!

milkman 09-16-2000 12:47 PM

John,
I can't believe that you feel that some people think of you as a Troll. There are some of us, like myself, who disagree with some of your views vehemently. But speaking for myself, I find your views well thought out and well stated, if misguided, and there's nothing wrong with a healthy debate. and I enjoy the debates we've had. Glad to see you finally found us here. I imagine that is the way others feel. You may often be wrong, but you're definately not a Troll.
As for this post, I don't think that our coaching staff is smart enough to figure out yet that things need to change.

KCJ~

Nice to see you come over to the Planet. I always like your positive "takes" on the Chiefs. I hope you decide to stay for awhile and contribute.

I'm still staying positive. We've lost two but we've looked solid and this is a really young team.

Red Eyes:
I find your views at least as misguided as you find mine. Thanks for the welcome.

If you read any of kcchiefs.com reporting, Gun is invoking the philosophy of Joe Gibbs (few plays from many formations (a la Denver and St. Louis), is talking a lot about balance, variety, etc... No harm in hoping.

This team is due for an offensive explosion. Last year when the Bolts came to arrowhead, the Chiefs rolled up 34 points in a shutout. That is EXACTLY the kind of victory we need NOW.

I'll settle for a 24+ point performance even if we don't do any better rushing the football than we have the last 2 Sundays. I wonder who will start at HB....

Hey John Que pasa? Are you still down in Georgia at Jump School? I see you finally made it over to this board. Welcome!! Left the other one when it became to politicized and leftwing orientated.(Re http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/biggrin.gifenise) As to your question reguarding JR the reason I see that they haven't opened up th offense is because of the O line IMO. With or without Szott their not blowing anyone out yet!
