She and Clarkson were made famous by American Idol which I have never watched.

Clarkson meh.

Carrie has talent and I'm sure she was playing out before the Idol gig.

But the Idol gig is what got her a record deal.

This ensemble included a popular artist that plays a lot on top 40 stations therefore it sucked.

houstonwhodat 02-10-2013 09:13 PM

Smoked many a spliff listening to Bob Marley records.

Oh yeah, I forgot she was an American Idol gig

But the musical landscape is totally different...genres are broken down it is easier to make music people can go to the far corners of wherever to find exactly what they like.

If you are annoyed because not all the good music is popular...well who gives a ****?

There is good music everywhere why do you need someone else to validate it?

The shifting music landscape does not mean there is not good music. It is actually the opposite.

Who said anything about needing someone to validate anything? My favorite band, The Counting Crows, is probably not on many people's top 5 list. I just hate seeing bad musicians propped up by the industry because they sell.

Some of us have busy lives and can't spend countless hours looking for good/new music. The only reason I'm even watching this is my Wife took our son out if town for a visit with the Granparents.

I can count on 1 hand how many minutes of American Idol I have watched

No, but it does make her a musician. Which is what led to the question.

technically I believe that would make her a singer, not a musician but whatever. Musician typically refers to someone who plays and instrument but again, whatever

Don't know if they did or not but it wouldn't surprise me.

How often do you hear the same tired music on a classic rock radio station?

I love Lynyrd Skynyrd but there is so much out there that never makes it on the air. How bout some Black Oak Arkansas or more CCR.

Back when I was in TV and radio we picked our own music and played what we wanted. If we had to take a shit we played Ina Goda Davida for 17 minutes.

Now the Program Directors pick the music and it's the same for their whole network of stations. You will hear the same classic rock music in Kansas City that you will hear in Houston if it's the same broadcast group with little to no variation.

They push what they want you to buy.

Wow, 10 stars who never won a Grammy. Incredible

Diana Ross
Bob Marley

Janis Joplin
The Who
The Doors
The Beach Boys
Buddy Holly
Grateful Dead
Patsey Cline

So see, who needs a silly awards show to validate good music? The public and history will ultimatly decide.

Counting Crows are in my top 5. Damn. I'm gonna owe you guys a lot of rep.

Check out Gaslight Anthem. They're a great new band and they reference counting crows in a couple of their songs.

I love Mumford & Sons. Just for the record.

I agree with you here.

But the point's been raised a few times this thread... the people who complain about there not being any good music and that all modern music blows haven't looked hard enough. In the indie music genre, there is a ton of variety. It's one thing to not have the time to look for a band you like, it's another to shit on an entire generation of music without trying to find something you like.

houstonwhodat 02-10-2013 09:21 PM

Sometimes there are occasions when they are both musicians and performers both.

i.e. Mick Jagger, KISS, even DEVO.

And of late No Doubt with Gwen Stefani.

Goddamn that woman if ****ing fine. I would eat that up.
