New digital camera wanted?
 

Broke our cheap Sony yesterday and am needing a new one. WE have a good nikon 35mm with a couple of nice lenses. I'm wondering if we go purchase a new Nikon digital would the lenses interchange....Need to do some research but I know there are some camera people here so thought I would ask. CP usually puts out some good advice. Would like to stay under 500 if I can! Suggestions? Thank you!

There won't be an issue mounting the old lenses from your film Nikon SLR to a new Nikon digital SLR, but the effective focal length will be affected. If I recall correctly, the effect would be roughly double.

Also, if you're looking to stay under $500, you'll be looking at either a used or refurbished model or a new D3000. If you're willing to spend a little extra, you should be able to get into a new body-only D5000 for between $500 and $600.

Personally, I would spring for the D5000 since it has the same sensor as the D90 and a higher native ISO than the D3000 (3200 vs 1600). The only real drawback is that the vibration reduction (VR) isn't built into the body, so you have to buy VR lenses to get that functionality.

well, for one thing that Fuji is huge. If you want a casual point and shoot, get a Canon A series (I have 2 A590s myself and have owned several before). if you buy a camera you can't slip in a purse or pocket and carry comfortably, you will take a lot less pictures.

Anyway. I'm open for suggestions. I'm pretty casual use, but would like to take decent pictures.

That particular Canon (XTi) has already been replaced by two different models (XSi and then T1i -- three if the T2i ends up replacing the T1i) that were progressively better, so if you're bargain shopping, I'd probably look for a clearance deal on the XSi instead of the XTi.

While it doesn't have the ISO range of the T1i, it's still a good DSLR, and it would be considered an upgrade from an advanced point & shoot like the Fuji at woot.

Compared to the XTi (assuming you're buying used), I'd probably go with the 20D. In terms of the guts, there probably isn't much difference between the two. They both have a 9-point AF and the same image processor, but the 20D would give you a more sturdy magnesium alloy body and a little better fps rate. For normal use, I doubt you'd see much difference between the 8.2MP in the 20D vs. the 10.1 in the XTi.

Basically, you'll find that many of the features that appeared in the older higher-end models get flowed down to the newer entry-level models fairly quickly, so while the 20D was quite a camera six years ago, you can find better features in a newer lower-end model like the T1i.

I'd say that if you're able to get into a used 20D with a kit lens for $300 or less, you're getting a pretty good value. It won't have a lot of the "whistles and bells" of the newer DSLR's, but it would be a sturdy camera that's capable of some very nice images when paired with a quality lens.
