A Belgian man is battling the country’s court system to get his marriage annulled after finding out that his wife of 19 years was born a man.

Jan, identified only by his first name, told the Het Nieuwsblad newspaper that he discovered his Indonesian wife Monica underwent a sex change after he and his son heard rumors, according to the Telegraph.

"I brought her to Belgium. That was not easy. The Belgian courts had serious doubts about the authenticity of her birth and her identity papers, but eventually they accepted it anyway,” he said. “I thought she was an attractive woman, all woman. She had no male traits."

Jan, who is now undergoing psychiatric treatment, added that he decided not to have children with his wife because he had two in his previous marriage, and that Monica pretended to menstruate by using sanitary towels, according to the newspaper report cited by the Telegraph.

Belgian courts have so far refused to let the marriage be annulled.

This sentence confuses me.
He heard rumors, then she had a sex change? Wouldn't her hairy bean-bag have tipped him off at some point over 19 years?

Are they saying that the wife had a sex change in Indonesia 19 over years ago? Isn't that akin to brain surgery in Manila 19 years ago?

Yeah, my read is that it had a sex change 19+ years ago... before they were married. Funny though. Sounds like he fought the GOVT on them to accept her certificate and make it all legal like, now he's fighting them again and saying "you were right 19 years ago".

It's just a poorly written sentence. They probably cut out some dangling participles or something.

It should be annulled because he's a total asshole. It's obvious that he doesn't love his spouse. I would like to think that a rational, decent person who has been in love with someone for nearly 2 decades would not suddenly fall out of love with that person because of a thing in the past that has had zero bearing on the relationship.

Yeah. I would totally trust someone who lied about something that huge and went to those tremendous lengths to deceive me.
