Olympus Has Fallen

Not sure if this looks really cool or really insane (in a bad way...). Lots of good people involved.

No thanks. Looks low budget. CGI was better in T2 twenty years ago.

GordonGekko 01-22-2013 09:17 PM

Definitely one I'll watch when it comes out on BluRay, but not theater worthy. If it turns out to be really really good, then maybe theater, but from the looks of the trailer I don't think so. Pretty solid cast though as pointed out.

mnchiefsguy 01-22-2013 09:38 PM

Does anyone actually believe that when they move the President to the secure bunker, that they would take all of the White House guests with them? The President goes to the bunker, his guests go somewhere else, especially if they are foreign nationals.

I have a soft spot for Gerard Butler due to Law Abiding Citizen, which was a terrible movie, but oh so enjoyable.

I'll admit I've considered watching this piece of shit.

L.A. Chieffan 03-22-2013 11:08 AM

Law Abiding Citizen could have been one of the best action movies of last decade if it didnt completely shit itself the last ten minutes

I would love to have this exchange with Mike Alden:

KCWolfman 03-22-2013 12:49 PM

Looks stupid.

The White House gets hit and the line "We are at Defcon 4" is underplayed during the preview.

Defcon 4 is one step away from "No known issues". We go to Defcon 4 when a 58 year old Lebanese woman creates an 8 track tape from her cave threatening America's shoe eyelet market. Obviously whomever wrote and edited the film has no knowledge of military and executive standards and practices.

What in the world did you find entertaining about that movie? There were bigger holes in that plot than in all of Stephen Hawkings research regarding black holes.

What lawyer has the power to get a prisoner outside the prison only to punch him in the gut and send him back in? Who can dig into 20 or 30 isolation cells (evidently conveniently all unoccupied) and never get caught? Do engineers really design prisons and sewer systems this badly?

Truly one of the single worst films I ever paid to rent, period.

The only thing ive ever really liked Butler in was 300. He was great in that. The rest of his resume is pretty meh.

Ok so I went and saw this.

It pretty much kicked ass.

Nonstop action, no bullshit. Lots of f bombs.

Kind of diehard-ish.

Dayze 03-23-2013 08:38 PM

cool; I think the wife even mentioned going and seeing it. once we found out that the cinema suites etc were the same price as the regular seats, we're planning on going to the movies more often.

Bob Dole hasn't been to a theater in years, but will probably rent this and look for stuff he recognizes. This is another one shot primarily in Shreveport. (Bob Dole keeps meaning to sign up on one of those "Extras" sites, but never manages to get around to doing it.)

Yeah when I saw the trailer for this on tv I wanted to see it. I'll wait for video, but it looks like good entertainment. Even if it has some stupid shit in there that doesn't make sense or isn't realistic, I'm not gonna pick it apart too much.

It was a good action movie. There were plot holes. But good action none the less.

Messages this movie preaches:
The president's life is more important than any national security concern.
The US government is totally not corrupt and anyone who says it is must be a terrorist.

The entire beginning of the movie was a plot hole. That movie should have been 5 minutes. Plane gets within 5 miles of the air space over the White House and gets taken down immediately.

This is not a movie to watch if you're striving towards realism, and it doesn't have a single new idea in it, but it was a good (not great) action flick. Its high point was the extended initial siege scene. White House Down was no more realistic, but more fun, so it's the better pick.

Oh, and if there has ever been a movie that induces Guilt By Casting more, I don't know what it is. Cases in point:
Spoiler!

Which was kind of the point, I thought. Neither were feasible or believable, but WHD not taking itself seriously - pretty much at all - worked as kind of a nod and a wink to the audience. OHF, playing it straight, seemed to me like it wasn't as self-aware of its own action-movie-ness, if that makes any sense.

That said, I can understand the opposite viewpoint here, so I'm not going to argue this, pretty much at all.

I guess. I went to see it in the theater to get drunk and watch some shit blow up. Olympus did that for me, unbelievable a premise as it was. I decided to torrent WHD, and I'm glad I did, because I nearly turned it off 4 times while watching it, but was too bored to do so. Too much little girl, too much weird dialogue -- it just took away screen time from eye candy and explosions, lol.

Aspengc8 08-30-2013 01:19 PM

Just watched this on blue-ray. OK for a popcorn flick, lots of head shots and stabbings... felt like I was watching a Call of Doody movie. The CGI was laughable, at best.

I thought it was pretty good based on the action alone. The Washington Monument scene was a little ridiculous though, pretty sure you can't zig zag through thousands of heavy ass bricks falling everywhere. ROFL

The Macguffin in that movie is one of the most poorly researched, illogical plot devices ever. Still fun to watch Butler do Butler things, but there were dozens of  moments.

I never watched 24, but in this case, two Koreans operating an AC-130 are able to use side mounted 20 mm Gatling Guns with marksman-like accuracy from 800 feet in the air. Also, dropping flares will defeat AMRAAM missiles, and private security contractors are allowed into the WH bunker.

The launcher on the white house didn't shoot amraams, which is why angel wing pattern flares worked. Probably sidewinder/stinger or some sort of heat seeking variant, which is why they shot all four of them. If it was a laser or radar guided missile, like the amraam, it only takes one (thats what the F-117 used to take the down AC130). I wanted to turn the movie off when the AC130 shot down the F117's.. so reeruned.

Those weren't F-117s, they were F-22s. I was under the impression that the second F-22 got a missile off, wasn't even talking about the SAMs, but I could be mistaken about what the second F-22 did.
