Sandbox football is gearing up - room for new owners.

Hi all,

For those of you who haven't participated, our Sandbox Simulations football game had a good initial test, and we're gearing up for Season Two now. We have some openings for new team owners, and the current leagues will be free forever since we're still beta testing.

The league works like this:

1. You get a team. Since we're in Season Two, you will be hired to run an existing team as coach/owner.
2. The teams currently have their end of year rosters from 2011, so you'll be able to do a fair bit of rebuilding. We'll hold the 2012 rookie draft and a veteran free agent acquisition, and then we'll conduct a season. You'll build a full 53-man roster.
3. The seasons are just like NFL football. You'll develop a general offensive and defensive philosophy and game plan for your team, and you'll deal with lineup shuffles as players get injured. Each week you'll get a play by play to see how your team fared.
4. The season is played on an accelerated basis so we should be done with it before the real NFL training camp starts. At that point we'll hold a 2013 rookie draft, and you'll be able to pick up veteran free agents over the course of the real NFL season.
5. Repeat as desired.

It's quite fun, actually, and the game engine works superbly. It's quite enjoyable to pull up the play by play and watch the game unfold, and to grumble as you have to shuffle lineups when injuries occur.

We'll be going commercial with the game at some point soon, but the two beta leagues will always be free. You'll be like George Halas with the Bears - at some point these franchises will be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.*

So if you're interested, let me know here and I'll assign you to a team. As with the real NFL, you don't have control over the team you inherit, so your challenge may be maintaining a powerhouse or more likely rebuilding a team that was managed poorly - you know, like the Chiefs.

* - Financial performance not guaranteed.

Here's the thread that started it all: http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=248221

If you want to play,

Those who want to play need to:

1. Post in this thread and we'll confirm whether a team is currently available.
2. Register on http://sandboxsimulations.com using the access code: 6Lanier3
3. Follow the registration procedure until you get to the screen where you select your team name. STOP HERE WITHOUT PICKING A TEAM NAME.
4. Once Rain Man assigns you a team, and you have completed through step 3, PM cdcox or post in this thread and cdcox will connect the existing team with your user account
.

I can take a 2nd team if no new takers.

Ebolapox 05-12-2013 12:13 AM

how much of a time commitment is it generally speaking?

Cool. It looks like you're in League 2 now, so would you want to take over the Springfield Attack in League 1? They went 6-10 last year and might need a quarterback going forward.

I would estimate the following over the course of a Sandbox Season.

Review roster and rookie draft - Maybe 5 to 10 hours, but in little bursts.
Veteran free agents - Maybe a few hours this year. It'll be very spread out and diffuse in future years, but this year will be a little more concentrated.
Set up your team's game plans - Two hours
Play week to week - Maybe 10 minutes per week.
Celebrate Super Bowl win - 15 minutes, but you'll already be thinking about the repeat.

Ebolapox 05-12-2013 12:25 AM

do you compete against other people for free agents, etc?

Yeah, we're got a cool system in the works for free agency. It's going to be something you do over time in the offseason, which is the actual NFL season. You'll be bidding for free agents as you see their performance in real games. We're trying to get it in place for this immediate draft, but if not we'll have it in place for the next one.

hmmmmm.... yeah, put me down for a team. I'm assuming there will be a bit of a learning curve, but let's do this thing

MagicHef 05-12-2013 12:36 AM

I really enjoyed doing it when I was involved, but my internet usage became close to 100% mobile, and honestly the sandbox website was really difficult to use on a phone. Has it changed at all, or is it the same?

Cool. You have a nice turnaround team in League 2, the Aurora Borealis. It was strong, but the previous owner's strategy of never punting didn't quite pay off. They were 3-13 last year, but are actually a pretty talented team.

Yeah, the site sucks on mobile. If there are easy tweaks i might try to implement them, but it might be a while before it runs smoothly on mobile (ie builing an app).

The team's a bit of a rebuilding project, but how about we put you down for the Lexington Akitas in League 2? They went 1-15 last year but weren't being actively managed, and they have the #1 pick in the 2012 draft to solve your problem at right tackle. Or maybe another position.

are there quantifications for speed/blocking/etc? in other words, chris johnson is pretty fast--he'd likely be a 97/100 but he's not a great pass or run blocker (so, what, 12/100?)

for QBs, peyton manning NOW would be like a 95/100 accuracy but maybe only an 85/100 (if I'm being generous). I'd assume something like this is used in an algorithm to actually simulate the games--having the numbers would be of assistance, especially the 'injury' stats (in other words, the 'madden' ratings)

We do simulations after the real NFL season and based on player performance during that season. As soon as we finish with the rookie draft and 2012 free agency, we'll simulate the 2012 season. If a player is injured in week 6 in the NFL, he's injured in week 6 in Sandbox. There are no player attribute ratings like in Madden, rather I use elaborate statistical analysis of the NFL season, including analysis of play-by-play data, to provide the underlying data that drives the simulation engine. Every player on the field contributes to the success or failure of a given play. So just focus on which players you think are the best and build your team accordingly.

I just logged on with my iPhone. Menu navigation isn't an issue for me. If I click on a menu item, the dropdown opens fine and stays down until I click the category I want. Are you having a problem with menu navigation?

One thing that doesn't work on my iPhone is drag and drop draft board sorting. But if you made your pick manually, or only kept a few players on your draftboard, it should be workable.

I could post the links, but there are like 20 of them that you'll need over the course of a season.

Some of that depends on how many of the folks from last year make it back this year. Some of those owners have been slow to respond, but may still show up. My sense is that we can still handle a few more first timers.

Rain Man will have a better handle on that within a day or so.

Yes, the menus open and then shut immediately. I was doing it in Chrome, but I just tried it with my phone's native browser, and the menus stay open for about half a second. If I'm quick, I can make it work that way.

Is it possible to move a team? I didn't see Los Angeles on the franchise list and everyone knows LA is a great sports town.

Go ahead and register according to post 29.

League 2 has an LA team that is available. Once we verify that we have enough teams available, you can have that team.

You're all hooked up as the St. Louis Spiders owner.

I'm registered under Trndobrd. On second thought, Oakland seems like a much better place to have a team....

Honestly, I'm not that picky on location as long as the City floats me some low interest, tax-free bonds, picks up the tab for all improvements around the new stadium, and a 20 year property tax abatement.

I need notice from the following owners that they are playing this year, or whether they are ceding their team. Our records show that these folks haven't yet logged in to look at their rosters and start building their draft board. Please let us know if you're going to participate (the draft is coming up fast) or if we need to give your team to another willing owner.

League 2:

Pompano Beach Pandas - ozona
Lexington Akitas - tyoung509
Fort Collins Horseteeth - magichef
Rancho Cucamonga Red Rage - dtforever
Little Rock Nine - kstater
Seattle Undertakers - andchiefs
Oklahoma City Outlaws - jreid18
Wichita Shox - Shox
Kansas City Fubar - Shorman22
Pembroke Pines Patteeus - Patteeu
Waco Compound Fires - Sully
Round Rock Tamba Tornados - Stanley Nickels
Topeka Thugs - KCChiefsman
Sioux Falls Swagger - Hootie2485

If I don't hear from you in this thread or via pm, I'll assume that your team is up for grabs and could give it away. Let me know before this tragedy strikes.

I'll update League 1 when I'm back home. I'm traveling right now.

I will play. My team is in bold

MagicHef 05-12-2013 05:53 PM

Ok.

It's been working on my phone, so I'm in. Now, since my team apparently won the division without me last season, we'll see if I make them better or worse.

Whoops, we gave your team away to EagleRob. I'm going to let Rain Man sort this out when he checks into the thread again.

tsyou606 05-12-2013 06:19 PM

ok cool, no worries

Rain Man 05-12-2013 06:20 PM

Okay, my train is landing or whatever trains do. I might be taking my wife out for a Mother's Day dinner and then I'll get on this.

My train actually broke down. It was kind of exciting, especially sing it only lasted for about ten minutes. And I might have seen a herd of elk, but they were pretty far away on a big ridge and could have been deer, bighorn sheep, or mountain goats.

Rain Man 05-12-2013 06:23 PM

My train is now stopping to pick up a "private railroad car". A private railroad car? What does that mean? I'm envisioning Wild, Wild West.

mrroandrro 05-12-2013 09:18 PM

Keep trying to get on but I'm at the screen where it says to name my team and its location. Now either I haven't been assigned a team or I'm doing it wrong. Help please.
