Can't agree with you.

Megadeth had one album I really liked.

Metallica had four.

I really couldn't care less about what either of them are doing now.

I do like a handful of Pantera tracks (Cemetery Gates primarily.) I guess I can dig the whole Cowboys From Hell album, more or less. The others are just so boring. Like, their whole "groove metal" sound was always pretty tiresome even on an album I kinda like. I mean, compared to the riff quotient of a thrash or death metal band. Even black metal, with its emphasis on atmosphere, brings more riffs to the table than the average Pantera song does.

For those reasons, Pantera are underwhelming to me. Dimebag is a great guitar player (though he is certainly overrated and is sadly influential), but an incredibly overrated songwriter. The Vulgar Display of Power album makes me want to throw up. Out of sheer boredom.

Go listen to John Petrucci try and fail for the thirtieth time to write a decent song. Be sure to report back.

Sounds to me like you simply don't appreciate the sludgy nature of their sound, and use that to call them 'garbage'.

I mean 'riff quotient'?

Damn, I bet you HATE rock and roll... what with them not noodling fast enough nor matching your riff quotient requirement. ROFL

Yeah. I can totally relate. for sure.
i was just listening to Mustaine's melodies and what not, and thought they were so much intricate than Hetfields.

Yeah, I mean it was just so long ago now. I haven't listened to most of the band's mentioned on this page in like 5 years. :D When it comes to technical proficiency, Metallica isn't really that great. I love their songs. MoP is still one my all time favs.

The whole reason there's so much damn music is because people like so many different things. I used to be that guy who ran around saying 'this sucks' or 'this is shit' if I didn't like something, but then I grew up and realized what an asshole that makes me. Yanno, like who the hell am I to call someone's artistic self expression 'shit'? Who the hell am I to define that? What have I done to put my own self out there?

There are too many critics in the world and not enough appreciators. Megadeth never kept my attention beyond the 90's. That doesn't matter, because Mustaine is still a metal legend. I'm just some asshole. :D

"Rust in Peace" is better than anything Metallica has ever released, IMO. But I'm also a musician and was a big fan of Friedman and his style before he ever joined Megadeth. His addition, for me, took Megadeth beyond thrash/speed metal and into something much more complex and fulfilling. At the same time, Metallica went the other direction, simplifying their formula and making it more consumable.

It's easy for me to understand why people like Metallica more. I just don't agree.

I too couldn't care less about what they're doing now.

They didn't even hold my attention that long. Of course, Metallica didn't keep my interest beyond the 80's. :D

One thing I can say about Metallica though is that, for me, at least the Black album was transitional. It could have been a musical brick wall like "Risk".

Friedman is ridiculous.

Mustaine's vocals annoys me. That's really the only thing about them that was ever off-putting to me.

That actually says a lot. You're like 10 years younger than me.

Yup. Thrash metal was dying when I started listening to heavy music, but I still collected the shit out of it cos I missed it.

I'm honestly more of a jam band/rock and roll/stoner rock/doom type of dude. I love sludgy riff driven rock.

Me too actually.

I'm not a huge thrash fan - in fact, Megadeth is really the only band of that ilk that I absolutely love. I like Slayer too.

My absolute fave is Sabbath, and the Dio incarnation is my favorite Sabbath lineup. I'm also a huge Priest fan. For new bands, I like Queens of the Stone Age and The Sword.

On the first point, yes. You're right. I was always expressing that this was my tastes, my opinion, what works/doesn't work for me.

Noodling does not equal riffing. And I listen to a fair amount of rock. I don't expect metal when I listen to rock. When I listen to metal, well, I expect metal. In large part that means either great riffs, song structures, or atmosphere. Preferably all three. When it comes to thrash metal, that means bands like Heathen, Anacrusis, or Vektor. But you don't need all three. With thrash you just really need a good riff quotient. Listen to Dark Angel's album "Darkness Descends." It's got like 150+ riffs over the course of the album. That's an incredible riff quotient. The very opposite of what bores me.
