My girlfriend backed out of my driveway and overshot the street (it's a narrow rural street). She accidentally ran over some ornamental long grass in the neighbor's yard. This happened Sunday and today the neighbor came over and wanted an apology and money for reparations. To shut her up I gave her $15 and went on my way.

What would you do?

I would do the same.

And revoke my girlfriend's license.

Is $15 the going rate for ornamental long grass? You might have overpaid

You did good keeping things on the up and up with your neighbors. Weed eating the flat parts might have had an adverse impact on neighbor relations

Heh! It was like 11:00 Sunday night when it happened. I couldn't even tell the ornamental grass was damaged until it was pointed out to me.

Just tell her it looks fine and she must be confused.

I would've told her to go get an estimate for what it would cost to repair the "damage". And I would've laughed at her for demanding an apology.

Since you did not cause any damage I'd tell the curmudgeon to get stuffed. Then I'd call my girlfriend and tell her I just had to kick out $150 in lawn repairs to the neighbor and demand to PIIHB.
