NFLScoop is reporting that the Denver Broncos have announed Gus Frerotte as their starting quarterback for this Sunday's game against the Chiefs. For more information log onto www.nflscoop.com

Donkey Dick fans better hope he doesn't run into a wall and strain his neck this time.

Oxford 09-22-2000 03:47 PM

I think this means that GC/JR are going to play field position games with him. Pin them deep, shut off the run and make him throw. Doesn't bode well for our balanced offense.

Ugly Duck 09-22-2000 03:59 PM

Heh-heh. Go get 'em, boys!

One Arrowhead Dave 09-22-2000 04:57 PM

hopefully he comes down with another case of Jay Schroeder disease.

Frerotte had a so-so preseason this year. I compiled numbers for him from the box scores for the preseason games that are on sportsline.com. Here's what I get:
47 of 78, 496 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, for a passer rating of 77.7. All of the preseason games were on grass, by the way.

Last year, Frerotte struggled on grass (but all of those were away games, as he played for the Lions). In four games (vs ARI, CHI, GB, and TAM) he was 84 of 152 (55.3%) for 999 yards, 3 TDs and 6 INTs, for a rating of 65.7, compared to a rating of 103.7 in 5 games on turf--including a great performance at home against the Rams in which he went 12 for 16 for 209 yards and 2TD (156.3 rating).

Frerotte's career totals are 62 games, 52 starts, 919 of 1710 (53.7%) for 11,886 yards, 57 TDs, 51 INTs, for a passer rating of 74.5.

KCJohnny 09-22-2000 08:40 PM

Frerotte is a good QB tho it should not matter. KC was able to beat Elway and Griese, so Gus should not be a problem. The real story here is the KC ground game which gained 365 yds rushing against the Donx in '99 (182.5 ypg). The Donx are giving up 5 ypc this year. If KC can run the ball as well as they did last year in Mile High (177 yds rushing) they should win handily.

Hello All,

I've been trolling around this board a bit this week, and have come to the conclusion that you are all a bunch a delusional slapnuts. Your beloved Chefs have played primarily horrible football all season (including preseason) with the exception of one DECENT game against a HORRIBLE team.

Why do you folks think you are 8 point dogs to the Broncos? Gus is no Brian, just as Anderson is no Gary who is no Terrell, but they all play behind one of the most skilled O-lines in the league. You will not stop the Broncos from putting up points -- your only hope is to do the same.

And I don't care is your put up 100 points against the Bolts. They wouldn't cut it in NFL Europe this year.

KCJohnny 09-22-2000 09:52 PM

Keep your delusions alive, bud.
KC is 6-4 vs. Shanny and Gunther is 2-0. KC has scored 83 points in the last three meetings with Denver (27.6 ppg) and the Chiefs gained 365 yds rushing against the donx in '99 (182.5 ypg). If Denver wins, it will be very close. If KC runs the ball at all, forget it.

SMJ, the Chiefs have been playing terrible all season? Wow, way to undermine your "take" in a hurry. Apparently, you didn't watch the Tenn game where KC led for 59 minutes and 10 seconds. Perhaps you missed the Colt game which was tied going into the fourth. I don't mind criticism of KC on this board but you'd better know what you're talking about.

I'm watching you, so don't be a troll.

JSMBantam 09-22-2000 10:04 PM

Tennessee and the Colts were both overrated coming into this season. They have both been beaten. The Chiefs have looked weak since training camp opened this year. "Terrible" might be inappropriate, but "weak" certainly isn't.

BTW, Bronco fans did not delude themselves last season, though they didn't play a team that finished under .500, and most of their games were close. The Broncos were one step away from being a playoff caliber team. The Chiefs are in the same boat this year.

Again, why else would you be 8 point dogs?

morphius 09-22-2000 10:10 PM

Bantman - Teams are given automatically 3 points for it being a home game, so actually it is a 5 point lead, not even 1 TD.

KCJohnny 09-22-2000 10:11 PM

JSM:
Hopefully you will have the guts to come back to the BB and eat crow after KC wins.
If not, you are just another blowhard riding the crest of conventioanl wisdom.
BTW, GUn is 2-0 vs Shanny....

JSMBantam 09-22-2000 10:16 PM

"just another blowhard riding the crest of conventioanl wisdom"

As opposed to being a delusional slapnut. I'll stick with conventional wisdom.

Yet -- I wouldn't put money on this one, because I see the Broncos by 7 or 8, no more.

And, BTW, I PROMISE to post within 1 hour of the end of the game, either way, if you'll pledge to do the same.

G_Man 09-22-2000 10:36 PM

JSM - If you're going to knock the Chiefs' competition, be honest about the Broncos'. St Louis' defense was VASTLY overrated, Atlanta's just plain bad, and oakland squeaked by those HORRIBLE Chargers by, what, 3 points at home?

JSMBantam 09-22-2000 10:51 PM

The Rams aren't bad competition, but I agree that their defense is quite sorry.

The Falcons and Raiders are unproven -- aren't they undefeated in games not played against Denver?

So, take away the Broncos games with these opponents, and those three teams are a combined 7-0.

Let's do the same for the Chiefs competition, they are a combined 0-5.

The only wins that Indy and the Titans have had have been against the Chiefs.

So, now, let's be honest...

G_Man 09-22-2000 10:55 PM

I was never in denial about the Chiefs' competition. But it's not like the Broncos have faced the cream of the crop (and won).

Garcia Bronco 09-22-2000 10:55 PM

You Choke Fans are killing me. Good Luck this weekend.

JSMBantam 09-22-2000 10:57 PM

Ok, I made a mistake.

Broncos competition is 6-0 in NON-DENVER games, while Chiefs competition is 0-4 in NON-CHIEFS games.

Still, to this point the Broncs strength of schedule is infinitely higher than that of your Chefs.
GO CHIEFS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mile High Mania 09-23-2000 09:27 AM

KCJohnny ... you kill me with these stats.

I hope you're here Monday morning after KC loses to Denver.

I'll be sure to post the stats from the game.
Last year was last year - live in the now.

KC and Denver are not the same teams they were a year ago. So, use the stats to make you feel better for the next 24 hours.

Reality will soon set in...

Iowanian 09-23-2000 09:31 AM

jism,

Exactly how much crack were you smoking before you came to the conclusion that the Broncos have a tougher schedule.

1.the Donks are playing a 4th place schedule from the west, because they won a whopping 6 games last year.
2. Neither TENN or INDY are pushover teams, though they may be over rated.

DanT 09-23-2000 05:36 PM

According to Sagarin (sagarin.com), the Chiefs' schedule to date has been the 15th hardest in the NFL and the Broncos the 20th.

DanT 09-23-2000 06:46 PM

This year Denver blew out a team that was 5-11 last year and beat another team that was 8-8 last year. The lost to a team that was 16-3 (including playoffs).

We blew out a team that was 8-8 last year and lost to teams that were 13-4 and 16-4.

Last year, the Broncos lost home games to Miami, the Jets, Minnesota, KC and the supposedly horrible Chargers.

This year is a different story. You see, they just resigned their former special teams captain for the league minimum, a guy whose talent is so extraordinary that it was thought (at least by him) that he could become a defensive starter with the Chicago Bears. The Bears decided to take their chances without him. But, see, he's really, really good and everything the Broncos do is just wonderful and now that they're getting their new stadium built by the taxpayers, the Broncos have more than enough incentive to put something better on the field than that 6-10 team from last year and, oh, well, you'll see, just watch, all Chiefs fans are just soooooooo deluded.

DanT 09-23-2000 06:52 PM

By the way, Sagarin's current ratings (including his ratings for strength of schedule) are based strictly on results from this season, not last season's records. My last post was meant to offer a secondary argument against the proposition that Denver's strength of schedule is even better than the Chief's, let alone "infinitely" better.
