pc question
when i plug in my usb cord to charge my new smartphone my computer makes a deep tone and asks me to insert a cd with the program on it to install new hardware...
i click on cancel and the messages go away, but sometimes the whole damn thing (the pc) reboots when i plug in my phone... i know, i know, don't use the usb port to charge my phone... but i really want to be able to since it's right next to me and i don't have any outlets close enough... as always, advice will be appreciated... |
It's trying to read your phone kind of like an external USB flash drive or a media player. Ideally, dig around online and find the driver for your phone and install it.
I THINK you can change the phone to just charge without setting up a data connection, but that'll vary by phone. Post your phone's model and (if you know it) OS version, and we'll see if we can figure out where that lives. If you don't like that option, they make things called "charge only" USB cables that are missing the data wires. If you go that route, it should charge the phone without prompting you to install anything. |
^^ What DaFace said ^^
Play around in your phone's settings and see if there's a way to specify how it reacts when plugged into the PC -- eg, Charge Only vs Sync/Backup/whatever. |
i found the galaxy s3 driver and installed it - no change...

As for the charge only (software) route, I found a couple of forums that mention the charge only mode living here:
Menu > Settings > Wireless and Network > USB Utilities However, it sounds like they've largely gotten rid of that option in recent updates to Android. Honestly, if the driver option doesn't work, I'd grab a charge only cable. |
