Pens and Paper

Yeah, off topic as hell, but someone needs to throw you guys a curveball every now and then.

Do you have a favorite pen/pencil type/style? If you're buying journals, are you picky?

I like fountain pens, and someday, I'll pick up some Mont Blanc and Waterman fountains, but in the meantime, I'm OK with disposable Pilot Varsity and the occasional upgrade.

I also am picky about my journals. I like the Moleskine/Piccadilly graph paper journals, and Ive been known to buy MiquelRius graph ring notes by the case.

Anybody else that picky?

griZZly64 05-03-2013 09:24 PM

I think those companies would be out of business if you were the only one buying their products

'Hamas' Jenkins 05-03-2013 09:24 PM

In school I always liked Pilot pens. One semester I thought it would be fun to have all Mead Composition notebooks like John Doe in Se7en (yes, my sick **** ass bought them for that reason), but I got two B's that semester and hated the wide rule, so I generally bought one Five Star three subject notebooks and three Mead single subjects.

Uniball Vision Elite is the best disposable pen I have used.

cdcox 05-03-2013 09:25 PM

I really like gel ballpoint pens.

rockymtnchief 05-03-2013 09:25 PM

Not sure of the names or sizes, but I like the medium tip gel pens and medium Sharpies for my work. Nothing REAL fancy. I lose them too often.

MMXcalibur 05-03-2013 09:25 PM

I have the neatest handwriting known to man. I get comments from others on my printing being almost printer-like. For me, I have about 50 of these pens and carry them on my person constantly: http://www.amazon.com/uni-ball-Visio...l+vision+elite

Best you can get. Doesn't smear and smooth writing. You get the occasional bad pen, but for the most part, they are top of the line.

As far as journals, I found that Moleskine smears too much. I get regular Mead notebooks, usually the graph paper notebooks.

I have a Mont Blanc roller I take to more formal meetings but think those Vision Elites may be better than it to write with.

The Lance Armstrong of pens.

Mojo Jojo 05-03-2013 09:28 PM

Love my Mont Blanc fountain pen.

mikey23545 05-03-2013 09:33 PM

When I was a kid I always thought fountain pens were unbelievably cool.

I guess I still love the way they write, but they're too much of a smeary mess to use every day.

Lying, cheating pens? No thanks. You know damn good and well they've been ink doping for years.

Pentel mechanical pencils (0.7mm)
Fountain pens when possible
Uniball or custom pens when a fountain pen isn't available

Yeah, that is the brand of gel point I use. Preferably black ink.

I'm left handed so pens don't work so well for me.

I just use regular notebooks for my writing.

I used a Zebra v-301 fountain pen for a month or so at the start of the year, really liked it, but the ink cartridges didn't last long. I'm back to using Pilot G-2's, sort of my go-to pen. I prefer the 07 but for some reason bought a pack of 05's a while back. Think they're good pens, the link flows smoothly (occasionally a problem with the zebra fountain) and lasts a long time.

Levenger.

NewChief 05-03-2013 10:21 PM

Retro 1951 makes some nice pens that aren't crazy expensive. They have fountains, but i like the Tornado. Great form, feel, and flow. My wife actually owns a paper store (@shindigpaperie on twitter and Instagram) so I can geek out if you really want me to. I will say that there is a very nice pen store in KC.

Phobia 05-03-2013 10:48 PM

There was a day when I wore Rolex and wrote with Monte Blanc. I don't do that any longer but a MB is a very smooth writing utensil. No doubt about that.

mnchiefsguy 05-03-2013 11:10 PM

Pilot G2 is a good pen. I am currently using a Pilot v5 RT. It writes well.

Buehler445 05-03-2013 11:45 PM

Pilot g2

Pentel dr grip .05 pencil.

Legal pad.

I use one of my fountain pens most of the time

NICE!

The Zebra Gel Pen is one of my favorites along with my Gold Cross pen I've had for around 20 years plus a hand made pen I bought at an art show in Mountain View CA 15 years ago.

I always select a medium point black ink Cross compatible for refills

NewChief 05-04-2013 01:49 PM

For those in KC, here is the shop up there with a nice selection:

Does bacon come in pen form?

JoeyChuckles 05-04-2013 01:53 PM

I would only use Moleskine pens and paper up until I switched everything to Evernote a few months ago.

Have you seen this?

Kind of gimicky, but also kind of a cool merging of two things I like.
