As an American, what do you call yourself?
 

I know you guys are having too much fun in the hootie thread, but this is cereal.

Lately, I've been hearing people say stuff like "only idiots from North America call themselves Americans." I usually respond "Everybody in North America calls themselves Americans?"

I've only recently begun to hear this. This must be something new, it's quite baffling.

To be fair, it's usually nerdy kids playing Path of Exile or some other PC game I'm playing. There will be a discussion about it every other day or so in the general chat. I've never heard anybody say this in person.

But what is the deal here? It's not just one time or one guy saying stupid shit like this, it happens a lot. Like it's improper for us to refer to ourselves as "Americans." Is this improper?

Should we call ourselves United States of Americans? or United Statsians? lol, I don't think so.

I'm guessing that some people probably took a latin american class or some shit and their professor told them it's not the correct thing to say or some shit.

I imagine these people are from other countries. No American is going to give somebody a hard time because they referred to themselves as an American.

And FTR, this isn't some proud to be an American speech or some bullshit like that. There are 20 other countries I'd rather live in.

I think it's just other NA/SA countries that have an issue with it. When I've traveled in Europe, that seems to be the preferred name for us. People say we are from "America" and that we are "American".

When I talk to my friends from Europe, they generally refer to themselves from their country not region.

I was walking down the street in Ireland last summer during a Horse Racing Festival. A group of drunk Irishmen came up to me and said " Hey your an Amreican, come and drink some Pints with us." My wife asked how they knew I was an American? and they said "He has an American head"

So I guess since I have an American head I call myself an American.

I always use the word "American" when referring to someone from the US. I dunno what all this hubbub is about. If they're from Canada or Mexico, or from any else in North or South America, Ill just say where they're from, ie Mexican, Canadian.

In 2006, I went to Europe for 3 weeks when I was just out of college. The only people I met that gave me any shit about being an American were Canadians. Everyone else was extremely cool.

Abroad, I've tried to be conscious of this and say "I'm from the United States," only to be quickly corrected and told that I'm an American.

I agree with the criminal reject. Same with calling the winner of the Superbowl "World Champions." It's simply inaccurate.

Literally it's not correct. However if you believe that the best players in the world play MLB then it makes sense. Same with champions of American football being perceived as "World Champions."
