Tajh Boyd
Let's talk about this kid. I don't know enough about him, and there are some smart draft minds on this website. I can't even find a damn highlight tape dedicated to him on Facebook.
I was impressed by him last night enough to get online and start watching all the highlights I could find on his games. The funny thing is he has shaky throwing mechanics like Geno does. I was impressed by his accuracy on the long ball, hitting his guy in stride, but question so far (haven't seen enough) his arm, and how much power he's got in it. What do you guys think? What do you guys know about the kid? |
His performance last night was tremendous and I'm willing to give him a look. But I do have a feeling once everyone steps a period of time away from the bowl game and review all of his game film, they may not see him as rosey as last night. Then again he could be coming into his own now?
|
Too short. Hitch in his throw. Not enough arm strength.
No thanks. |
Like DeAndre Hopkins. He has/had some quality college weapons to throw to.
|
I don't think his game translates well to the next level. He flashes adequate arm strength but usually I watch him and think he doesn't have enough arm. Also he is not consistently accurate. Just based on a few games I have seen of him.

He's a junior.
Also he has a sick group of WR's to throw to, among the best in college football. |
Those "incredible throws" last night were more of "incredible catches" than anything. That last touchdown was a nice throw over the middle, however.
|
I need Como to weigh in on this before I know which way to go.

Well, my initial thought was arm strength was an issue. Turns out I'm not alone in that thinking. He definitely has a hitch in this throw. The mechanics are wacky for sure.

That needs to be the biggest concern for any QB, IMO. From there, I want size (for durability) and arm strength (because this does get undervalued). |
he's better than that piece of shit glennon...
|
So people aren't allowed to crucify Geno Smith for a piss-poor bowl game performance, but are allowed to glorify a guy out of nowhere for a good one?
If one game doesn't matter, then one game doesn't matter. |
If we are going for a backup, would rather a guy whose strength is a pocket passer. Why not take nassib or Jordan Rodgers late instead.
|
I've read alot of pro Geno and all that but one guy i havent heard mentioned yet is Nassib from Syracuse have watched alot of film and i think he is the steal of the draft.
|
Shit guys, I'm not putting him on a pedestal here. I just wanted some input on him. I've been Geno or bust for a long time. He just wasn't on my radar and he impressed me enough last night to start looking at some highlights on him.

very tough guy, but not sure he can make it in the NFL though
throws look 'loft' instead of 'zip' to me but i haven't watched a ton of his games. |
Geno is better, we have the 1st pick.....PASS

That's all I'll say to that. To start this year I liked Boyd as a potential QB to work his way into the top round should Wilson and Barkley stumble along the way. That has happened, but Boyd hasn't done much. I haven't been watching him much, but he's a bit of a spazz in the game I saw. I imagine there'd be a learning curve if he got to the NFL of, "Oh shit the ball is in my hands now what do I do?" He would be better off staying his senior year. I think he can be successful. A lot of the problems he has are confidence/mental based. |

There are still at least a half dozen options better than Boyd that will be available.
|
When I heard that Chiefs scouts were at the NC State vs. Clemson game to scout Glennon, I made it a point to watch that game because I wanted to see Glennon. I wasn't blown away by Glennon, but thought he was relatively decent. However, I walked away from the game being more impressed by Boyd. Boyd went 30/44 for 426 yards with 5 TD's and 2 INTs while rushing 18 times for 103 yards and 3 TD's. Dude looked sharp as hell that game.

Boyd this season finished 287/427 for 3896 yards for a 67.2 completion % and 36 TD's and 13 INTs for a QB rating of 165.6.
|
I'd love to draft him in the 4th, but he'll probably go earlier than that if he declares. Gives you a zone read look. Good developmental prospect.

7th round developmental prospect. To the practice squad!

I was lurking other teams' message boards the other day and ran into one (can't remember which team exactly, but I THINK it was a Jets board) and the general opinion seemed to be that Tajh is the QB they should take in the 1st and that he is who they would select over anyone. They aren't as passionate about Boyd as we generally are about Smith or anything, but on this particular board, people seem to have a general agreement that Boyd is their man. It's just kind of funny/interesting how opinions and perceptions vary from board to board/team to team.

But even if you got a couple TDs off a trick play or fake punt per year for 5 years, that's worth a 4/5 round pick. |

That Sammy Watkins that he throws to is a badass.

Similar situation with Boyd hindsight is always 50/50 ... especially when it comes to drafting QB's |
Comparing Boyd to Wilson is absurd.
For Wilson, the knock was almost entirely about height (age, too, to a lesser extent). With Boyd, that's just one of the three concerns. |
Quote:
QB draftee that doesn't quite meet the 'eye test' for an NFL so people don't want to draft him. Then later on if he does turn out people will bitch about their team not taking him. players aren't the same but the situation is similar |
Quote:
Not even sure what you're trying to argue, since my analysis of Boyd has absolutely nothing to do with Wilson or short ****ing QBs in general. |

The general situation is the same |
I am not a big Geno fan but I would much rather have Geno than Taj

He definitely seems like an underrated guy, but the guy who is the most underrated QB in this entire class IMO is Ryan Nassib.
Everytime I watch that guy play I'm very impressed. He has the potential to be a very good QB. Very good tools too. |
