Pioli unlikely to change draft strategy regarding OT spot

http://www.profootballweekly.com/201...tegy-regarding

When the Chiefs pick at No. 21 overall in April's draft, it would make sense that they would be looking at offensive tackle, a position at which they appear to be thin. Kansas City brass might not share that opinion, however. The way we hear it, the Chiefs actually feel comfortable with their current situation at tackle. That includes ORT Barry Richardson, who started all 16 games in 2010 but did not excel by most standards. We hear K.C. doesn't believe that Richardson is a major weakness up front, so they instead are likely to put their focus elsewhere in Round One, such as beefing up the interior of the O-line or bolstering the receiving corps.

Also, in GM Scott Pioli's time with the Patriots and now Chiefs, he largely has ignored the offensive tackle spot in the draft and never has taken one in the first round. With this year's OT class mostly underwhelming and the better values coming in the later rounds, Pioli is unlikely to waver from this strategy.

Heh, like the Safety position ? It will be a NT or an OL with the 21st pick

The Whisperer speaks.

Thread over.

He's taken a tackle almost every year since 2000. I'm not sure how that's 'ignoring the OT position in the draft'.

:spock:

What about it? The only thing anyone had to go off of to argue against the possibility of him selecting Eric Berry was an assumption Peter King (See: ****ing moron) pulled out of his ass.

What about it? I'll tell you, when the Pats drafted Jared Mayo. Experts thought that they would draft an ILB that high (for KC it's Tyson Jackson). If a player fits "the right 53" of a positional value/ need position on the field never count out any possibility in a high draft slot with Pioli at the helm.

I’m going to make a bold prediction and say the Chiefs will draft “their highest rated player” at a position that “they determine is a need” but he must also fit the “Pioli character profile”.

You could say the Chiefs would never draft a QB with the 1st round pick because after all, the Pioli Patriots and the Pioli Chiefs have never drafted a 1st round QB. The past draft history with Richard Seymour, TY Warren, Vince Wilfork, and Tyson Jackson being 1st round picks might also say probability favors a big defense lineman will be drafted.

But QB was never a big need for the Patriots after Tom Brady took leadership of the team and the defensive line draft was greatly influenced by using a 3 – 4 defense and needing those players.

Saying the Chiefs won’t draft an OT in the first round because of past draft history would be ignoring the need and highest rated player factors. When the need and value was there New England has drafted offensive linemen in the 1st round Logan Mankin and several offensive linemen in the 2nd and down.

So this year for the Chiefs, we have needs at center (Wiegmann, Niswanger), nose tackle (Edwards), wide receiver (Chambers*, Cooper, and Curtis), outside linebacker (Vrabel), offensive tackle (O’Callaghan), quarterback (Croyle), free safety (McGraw), fullback (Castille, Cox), tight end (Pope), cornerback (Daniels) and maybe defensive end (Smith).

Will the Chiefs draft for extreme need at nose tackle and perhaps ignore best value and character? Is there a nose tackle in later rounds that would fit?

Is there enough value with centers in the draft that they warrant a 1st round pick as opposed to maybe drafting one in the later rounds?

Two other questions that have to be asked concerning all of these positions, do the Chiefs currently have players on the roster that could fill the need and will there be free agents that can be brought in?

There’s a small group of players that would be available when the Chiefs pick at 21 that match up with value, need, and character that the Chiefs could draft.

I’m thinking there’s a high probability of an offensive lineman in the 1st.

*Not a free agent but will probably not be on the team.

Sorry kind of long, but got started and one thought led to another.

BPA in a position of need is my guess to, good post Wilson 8. Hope the Chiefs also do the same in second and third and not their typical reach.

Yeah, great post wilson8.
