What is something that is secretly cool about your job?

I'm not talking about salary or vacation benefits. I'm talking about stuff that's not obvious to an outsider and will never be mentioned as a benefit, but nonetheless it's kind of cool and brings you a little enjoyment in your workday.

For me, a secret cool thing is that I get to go behind the scenes at tons of jobs. I've gotten to tour the back operations at everything from jails to caulk factories to college presidents' offices, and I get to hear about their industries and challenges and how they view the world. I really like doing this.

Another secret cool thing is that when we do focus groups we often get to take home pizza and brownies.

The third cool thing is that I get to know all sorts of great internet places for data. I'm always hunting around and finding odd data sets. Granted, not everyone may think that's cool, but I do.

What about y'all?

loochy 09-11-2013 03:18 PM

I help design and support a super high visibility product that is on the absolute cutting edge of technology.

I get to evaluate consultants. But they don't know it.

Several cool things about my job;

1. We drink beers every Friday at our weekly sales meetings and sometimes we have food paid for by the company.

2. ALL my gas and tolls for my car is paid since the day I started-no record keeping on mileage or where I'm going, just receipts. All my appts are on the calendar. This has saved me a ton since I started especially on personal trips.

3. All my cell phone bills are paid by the company.

4. I don't report to an office expect for our weekly sales meetings.

5. Computer and internet paid for by company.

6. All the coffee, snacks, and other items in our kitchen in our satellite office, where I work from, is free.

7. My medical plan is both paid for and fantastic

Overall a great place to work for and our company has a market niche that is unique with an easy sell.....

I’m in speed measurement, which is cool enough on it’s own, but I’ve also logged plenty of test time in the police intercepter packages from Chevy(Caprice when they still made them), Ford (Crown Vic), Dodge (Charger), and even spent a few weeks running video from the seat of a BMW R1100RT.

THAT is a great gig. Who do you work for?

Hoover 09-11-2013 03:52 PM

I own a couple of small businesses. The main benefit is being your own boss, which can be a blessing or a curse.

I could say my favorite benefit is that I never have to purchase alcohol. We put on a number of high dollar fundraising events which I control the catering. When ever we get the opportunity to control the bar I play bartender and basically purchase what I want. Any left overs go home with me. I don't really over purchase, but there are times when people just are not in the mood to drink and I really score some great stuff. I have not bought a bottle of wine or beer in years. When people come to the house they are always amazed at my selection. This is more difficult with hard liquor, but when the right event comes along I stock up. I've built a nice scotch collection over the years.

Another benefit is that I have a client who invites me to a number of "business" functions. That's usually 3 or 4 college football games, and one 4-5 day no expense sparred business trip. I actually get to help select the city, which is typically based upon what NFL game is going on. This has allowed me to attend most stadium in the destination cities in the country.

I had 4 10's until about a month ago...for 5 years I had that. Then the powers that be thought I should be present for at least a half a day on Fridays. It sucks, but it's still better than 5 days a week.

I'm also the only guy who does what I do. I'm a System Admin. I'm privy to more information than anyone in the office. I try not to be drunk with power...

2. I make my own travel schedule and I'm gone about 2-3 days of every week.:loser:

3. I've owned my own business(s) for over 10 years :usa:

4. I started my most successful company out the basement of my house - and no, it's not porn or meth:D

5. I plan to retire in 3 yrs or less :skip:

This. And it's incredibly cool. Watching defenses come down, and then hopes and dreams spilling forth from people who completely forgot they knew how is probably the coolest thing I've ever done. And I do it everyday. But not for the next week. It's my turn. :D

I put all my expenses on my Capital One card and get reimbursed every week, by doing this, I acquire a boat load of points for airline travel for free. I keep refineries, mines and power plants from blowing up at startups, which can be a challenge at times, but I really enjoy all the detail.

We used to have free massages in the office once a week, now they are once a month and we have to pay. Still, we have a dedicated office for it and its nice to just take a 30 min break like that during the day.

I also get to travel to interesting places that would be really expensive to get to on my own. Not typical tourist destinations, but interesting nonetheless.

I don't know when they died, or how the hell someone that died at least 30 years ago (I'm not sure of the actual date of death, just assuming) has a computerized medical claim being sent to me.

I was calculating when they turned 60 and it was 1931 and I knew that something was wrong lol.

I like the fact that my work is seperate from my home.

cdcox 09-11-2013 06:43 PM

My work is incredibly diverse. In the last year:

Building projects
We just moved in to a new 110,000-sq foot building. I didn't do much on the programming or design of the building, but have been deeply involved in the finishes, office assignments, moving logistics, and shakedown cruise.

I oversaw a $500,000 lab renovation, from conception through final construction

I have just been appointed to lead a committee of four faculty members to provide user input for 40,000 square feet of labs.

Supervision

I supervise about 25 people. Many of them are accounting and office staff types, but a few of them do things that increase the variety of my work experience. One guy runs a world wide computer network to transmit scientific data with high speed links to Russia, India, Africa. Another guy I supervise runs a nonprofit that promotes alternative transportation fuels.

Project direction

Projects I oversee include a multidecade, watershed database; a project to convert renewable feedstocks into chemical feedstocks; and global scale air pollution modeling.

Personal research

Gene regulatory networks that control conversion of biomass into simple sugars. Basically I set the research direction, supervise the students that do the lab and computer work, and edit their papers.

Student advising

I'm the main advisor for our department. I get to work with students on a daily basis to help them graduate sooner, overcome scheduling conflicts, or other problems.

Administrative stuff

I do all the course/instructor/room/TA scheduling for our department; handle curriculum issues; lead assessment efforts; approve programs of study for graduate students

Meet lots of interesting people

Former senate majority leader, a US representative, a best-selling author, business owners, ex-NFL QB etc.

I'm tired.

Personally, I'm not very trusting of people in cars.

That's why Lake Hollywood, which is just behind my house, it's awesome.

It's a four mile, fully enclosed, track. It circles the lake and there are no cars allowed inside. It's gated so the only vehicles are LA DWP vehicles and they are not allowed on the road during park hours.

Plus, you get a great view of the Hollywood sign, Moby's house, Bugsy Seigel's home and tons more. Plus, there are always hotties jogging, including actresses and models.
