I mean more for travelling though. I like being able to throw a few DVDs in if i'm on a trip, or if I'm staying at a hotel. And watch them on my laptop.

I haven't found a good way to replicate that yet.

Honestly, I have completely phased out physical DVDs from my collection. The only DVDs I still own are my daughter's kids DVDs. I have digitized my entire collection. Between that, and the availability of just about any movie streaming online, I haven't needed a DVD drive much. I use my iPad when I'm on the go. The HDMI adapter lets me hook it up to any TV for TV out, or I can watch directly on the iPad.

Weird.

Yeah, the problem is I spend a lot of time abroad, or flying, so streaming doesn't work so well. And downloading movies constantly can add up with the current prices. There's no good "used" movies you can get online.

But you're right, there has to be a solution. I'm ready to get rid of DVDs as well.

Ohh, they're saying bad things about my Nexus!

I still love it, but fair play on the app problems.

What are the dimensions of the Mini? I wonder how well it'll fit in the hand

WoodDraw 10-23-2012 12:06 PM

Right now Google and Amazon are praying for a $300+ price.

[edit]

$330 starting point. Hmmm

WoodDraw 10-23-2012 12:11 PM

That's a much better presentation than the last iPhone shit. Some good stuff...

Load them onto Micro SD cards and pop them in when you are ready to watch. You can get your entire collection on a handful of cards.

oh yeah.... Nevermind.

What kind of ripping software are you using to rip your DVDs?

Handbrake + VLC for decryption.

The Franchise 10-23-2012 12:30 PM

Do you just store them on a hard drive?

Well it's a bit harder than that. I don't want to hijack this thread, but it's my thread - so who cares. :D Step one is to rip them all and find a place to put them all (which as I upgrade computers has become increasingly hard to do. And then you're talking about finding a way to get them to all your devices when you want.

I have a HTC One S and Nexus 7, neither of which have SD card slots. But that's the choice I made, so I can't bitch about it. I still have an older Macbook Pro (not retina), so right now I use that mostly for travel. But I'm getting sick of the weight, so I want to upgrade soon. On the new Macbook Pro, SD would still be an option.

Right now, my general thought is to build an HTPC and a general "home cloud" with everything on it, and download/stream from there as I want. But I need to research it all much more. I'd prefer to do that along with a real cloud service, but I suspect I'll run into some storage and copyright problems. But we'll see.

Problem solved.

Now back on topic.
