Tommy Nobis gets pancaked by Death

This is kind of a big deal. It's not often that a team's first-ever player passes away. There's a lot of talk that perhaps he lost an opportunity to be in the Hall of Fame because he went to an expansion team back when expansion teams didn't get vaults of players thrown at them.

Nobis, the No. 1 overall in the 1966 NFL draft, was the Falcons' first-ever draft pick. He was named the Sporting News Defensive Rookie of the Year in his first season after being credited with 296 total tackles in 14 games.

From 1966-76, Nobis was named to the Pro Bowl five times, the All-Pro first team in 1967 and the NFL's All-Decade team for the 1960s.

The Falcons inducted Nobis into their Ring of Honor and retired his number 60 jersey in 2004. He was also inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.

If you’re named to the all decade team you should be in.

At least 1 of those dogs was a very bad dog.

Nobis was a good middle linebacker. Not Great. Nitschke, Lanier, Butkus, Curtis and Lambert were all Great players during that time period.

GREAT PLAYER! Undeniably one of the greatest of all time. He was a man among boys. Prayers up for his family and friends!

R.I.P. Mr. Nobis.

Jesse Tuggle was a bona fide badass.

No, No is was a great player who played with a team full garbage.

Those others were great as well, but they had great players all around them.

Nobis was all over making plays in spite of the lack of support.

Should have been inducted years ago.

I wonder who has the most pro bowls without a hall of fame selection. Because 8 for George Kunz is pretty impressive.

Rain Man 12-14-2017 11:29 AM

According to our friends at pro football reference, here are the guys with 7+ pro bowls who retired before 2012 and are not in the Hall of Fame. Which ones are most deserving?

I could certainly make a good argument for Johnny Robinson, and Jim Tyrer would definitely be in other than, you know, the thing at the end.

Among non-Chiefs, I'd go with Robert Brazile, or I hate to say it, Andy Russell. Nothing against Russell, but that Steelers defense gets too many accolades as it is.

That's amazing there are that many guys with that many Pro Bowl appearances who aren't in the HOF.

I think if you qualified or were voted to a pro bowl over half your career you should be in.

Bufkin 12-14-2017 02:38 PM

Nobis is worthy, but Mike Kenn is our most deserving. The greatest player in NFL history that you’ve never heard of, and one of the greatest left tackles in league history.
